In a spectrum ranging from acoustic driven roots-rock with bluegrass and country influences to aggressive rock, stateliner positions itself somewhere in the middle. Chris Wood (keyboards), Donny Davidson (vocals), Brandon Epps (guitar/background vocals), and Sam Martin (bass/background vocals) organized in September of 2005 in Nashville, TN and picked up percussionist Brady Beard in 2009. With a sound that is difficult to define, stateliner has found its closest description in roots rock.
If the genre is hard to define, it is because honesty usually comes in many forms but is inherently relatable. The content of the songs themselves is an introspective reflection of the lives these individuals have led. "We write about things we''ve experienced. If we sing about it, it''s because we''ve done it." Donny explains. When you walk into the spaces that stateliner has created, you know what you are walking into and the things that you are walking, sometimes running, away from. That''s what music is to these individuals, something that aides during life, something that answers questions, and occasionally asks them. stateliner exists because each of its members has something to say and believe music is the only way to convey it. stateliner leaves the audience knowing that they''ve definitely heard the songs of men who''ve lived and who might not make the best choices, but write and play the things they know.
