The Plan is made up of Kit Rodgers (Vocals, Guitar, Piano); Brandon Cottongim (Upright Bass); and Dustin West (Drums). These three musicians have very diverse musical backgrounds, but have an undeniable chemistry that results in a recognizable but unique form of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Kit Rodgers spent a decade or more touring as a solo acoustic singer/songwriter and released two albums during that time. As a solo act, Kit had the privilege of sharing the stage with such notable performers as John Mayer, Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland), Kristian Bush (Sugarland), and Shawn Mullins, to name a few. The Plan was put together as a means by which to add accompaniment to Kit’s songs, but has transformed into a band with each member bringing his own style to the mix. The Plan creates a sound that changes with each song, and has been compared with an eclectic array of artists such as Elvis Costello, Ben Folds, Steely Dan, R.E.M. and U2 among others.
Brandon Cottongim brings energy and a unique melodic bass line to every song. Brandon plays Upright Bass with The Plan, which adds a different texture than is found in most Indie Rock bands. Brandon also brings to The Plan a varied and extensive background in multiple genres of music. Brandon was a member of and toured extensively with Torture Kitty, a punk band signed with VML Records. He was also a member of the Rumbleseat Jitters, which was primarily a Jazz band, and the Twilight Sentinels, a Rockabilly band. The influence of his diverse musical experience is immediately noticeable in his constantly moving and melodic bass lines.
Dustin West brings a dynamic drumming style to the table and shares Brandon’s diverse musical background. A majority of Dustin’s experience has been with punk, heavy metal, and harder edged music, which makes him a powerful drummer and a hard hitter; however, Dustin also played with Brandon in the Twilight Sentinels (a Rockabilly Band), and even did a stint playing in the orchestra pit for theatrical performances. Dustin was also a founding member of Boy Genius, a punk band that was signed to Tommy Boy Records.
Although from different musical backgrounds, these three guys have found common ground and compliment each other to create a unique sound. You never know what the next song will sound like, but it will be well crafted, different, and is sure to stick in your head.
