Take Five: An Interview with Heretic Soul

Founded in Turkey in 2005, Heretic Soul combine death metal with the killer mosh parts of hardcore. The band made their debut with the 2008 EP Life Becomes Our Grave, which they supported by touring several key cities in Turkey. After inking a deal with Rotting Corpse Records in the United States, the band recorded its full-length debut, titled Born into This Plague, which definitely slays the ether with its distinct brand of nihilistic deathmosh metal.
What was it that first attracted you to death metal?
Erhan Karaca: “We started out listening to some stuff like Slipknot and other nu-metal stuff, and then tried new things, including more death-metal stuff like Behemoth and Cannibal Corpse, as well as some ‘core stuff. And now that’s our music, a blend of all death metal and ‘core stuff, with some black stuff thrown in sometimes.”
Tell me about your new release, Born into this Plague.
Erhan Karaca: “I think this release is a perspective from our view of life lyrically. It has our attitude in it—a nihilistic attitude. Technically, it’s faster, more aggressive, and more available for moshing.”
What’s the scene like in Turkey? What bands are you impressed with over there?
Erhan Karaca: “Not bad, but still not enough like the European or American scenes. There are fewer people attending concerts here than we deserve, but it’s growing, I think. We like the band Chopstick Suicide, a mathcore band from Istanbul. They are doing a great job.”
Tell me about the lyrics behind “21 Grams” off your 2008 EP Life Becomes Our Grave. What inspired them?
Erhan Karaca: “The meaning of ‘21 grams,’ it’s about losing the weight of your soul when you die. So, it’s about death—the song means that in it, 21 grams less, we’re alright!”
Tell me about your approach to percussion. Be as technical as you like.
Erhan Karaca: “Me and [vocalist and guitarist] Sarp have been friends since we were seven years old, so we pretty much grew up together. At first, Sarp and I were guitar players, then we started to seek out new members to play our songs, but it didn’t work. So, I picked up the sticks and started to play drums. But already we were doing all the instruments for songs, like drums, basses, guitars, and everything. Our current guitar player, Orçun, was on the bass when we were a three-piece, but we found another bass player (Burak), so Orçun is on the guitar now.”
