The story starts with Chris and Joylene. They met in a band called CheapPaperbackRomance. The band didn’t work out.
They did. They continued playing together as The Chris and Joylene Show from 2000–2004, and released two critically acclaimed records including the highly anticipated A Family Portrait in 2007 with fellow Beechfields artist Pupa’s Window.
While finishing that record, Chris and Joylene and their bassist Adam connected with local drummer Frank Corl and announced the formation of The Honest Mistakes.
This is their story.
And, btw, they aren''t all break up songs.

"You know an album entitled “Break Up” just is going to be wretchedly raw, seething with exposed emotions, and crybaby lyrics about what could have been, revisiting past decisions time and again. Well it’s that, sort of, but not really. And after all, a band that features members who originally met in a band entitled CheapPaperbackRomance surely knows what it means to be ironic romantic self-doubting lovers. The band to no surprise given their name didn’t survive, however Chris and Joylene continued to play together from 2000 to 2004 under the name The Chris and Joylene Show. The group leans on the pop sensibilities of punk and indie rock but utilizes witty lyrics and strongly tasteful melodies to not sound like a big ole cliché. Do they succeed? Absolutely. Ironic lyrics coalesce with dynamic pop that pulls at heartstrings (but not too much damn it), hoping to add themselves as a strong entry in Baltimore’s underground indie pop scene. I hear a whole slew of influences which the band readily admits – Teenage Fanclub and Fountains of Wayne. The Beechfields Record Label, yet again, has another solid winner on their hands. With the release set to launch of the 5th of January, can you think of a better way to usher in the New Year? I know my New Year’s resolution of listening to more awesome underground indie pop is already off to a great start with the “Break Up”".

"The Honest Mistakes have spent the last decade desperately trying to reach the high they have now been introduced upon. Break Up is the result of a name change (formerly The Chris & Joylene Show, named after the group’s founders), a two year hiatus, three years of recording, and an all-out inspirational attitude that would not allow them to simply lay back and quit. After years of riding the coat tails of completion for so long, the final product is very impressive. Breaking up is hard to do, as the legend goes. But The Honest Mistakes found a way to make the concept pretty. With a series of low key pop ditties like “Roses” or “Take A Picture”, it might almost seem like they’re having fun. Indeed, Break Up is probably much more personal than one could really know, but it doesn’t void the listener from connecting with the tunes on their own level – a sign of intelligent songwriting. And co-founder/writer Chris Ehrich is obviously hip to said facts that create a pretty song."

"A very straight forward concept album here from the duo of Chris Ehrich and Joylene Dahlia (joined by bassist Adam Kivisaari and drummer Frank Corl). The bright bouncy opening of the title track contrasts with ironic lyrics from the ex-lover''s POV. In fact given the depressing theme, there is not a single slow heart wrenching ballad to be found. The guitars and beat are well done and Joylene''s vocals have a little Liz Phair meets Carole King quality. This comes through on the excellent mid-tempo "Roses" which is really an angry song played like a up-beat folkie freedom anthem. The very entertaining jam continues on "Long Way Around" with a tight lead guitar weaving around the vocal track. One of best songs here is "Sidekick" with it''s rolling drum beat and guitar break, about a shoulder to lean on after things fall apart. The song is also the perfect lead-in for the stellar gem "Stay" with a killer guitar riff rhythm and more hooks than a bait shop. You gotta love the long pause and key change towards the songs end - that''s the most fun you can hope for in a break up. Each song is solid with no filler here and fans of Marykate O''Neil and Fountains of Wayne should grab this release. Makes a great Valentine''s Day gift (no, really!)"
