Details:
Gwen Budow passed away in the fall of 1998 at the age of 37 after a fight against Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Her last day was spent with family and friends in the living room of her home in Ann Arbor, MI. They spent that day reminiscing, talking and singing songs... I''m sure just how Gwen wanted to spend it. She left behind three beautiful young children, a loving husband, as well as uncountable relatives and friends whom she touched in her short time with them. Gwen was not unlike you or me. In fact, she was very much like us all. She led a sadly shortened life, but in that time had many experiences, both good and bad, along the way. Experiences similar to those that you and I have every day of our lives.

Nearly eight years after her passing, in the fall of 2006, I began work on The Gwen Project in Kalamazoo, MI from a grant given by Western Michigan University''s Jazz Department. After a successful live performance, we knew that the next step would be recording it the way it was initially envisioned. The final product is a 42 minute musical collage of musical interpretations based from real memories of Gwen''s life from those that were closest to her: Her friends and relatives. It acts as a looking glass from many different angles into the life of Gwen Budow, from her childhood to the day before her death. These actual memories were masterfully arranged into music by five different composers from across the country who interpreted and composed each specific memory in their own unique way. When all combined, it is as though you are viewing Gwen''s life through many different eyes. It is something quite extraordinary.

Though you might not know her, that''s not saying you can''t understand or relate. This opus is in honor of a great, loving and caring woman that those that were lucky enough to experience her in her short time on this planet, will never forget. But it is also in honor of you, and the life and story you lead every day of your life.

We all have our own story; this is just one of them.
