ROSIE BROWN
Strange Recollection (Stück Records)

Jazz flips country, folk flips its lid, and music goes round and around until
concerns about genre are rocked.

The third album from the ever-intriguing singer-songwriter Rosie Brown is another
exquisite collection of songs. Like her debut, By the Blue, and its follow-up, Clocks
and Clouds, Strange Recollection is produced and co-written by the inimitable
Austrian composer / guitarist Bernd Rest, who laces the record with his other-
worldly guitar work and gorgeously cinematic, airy arrangements.

Rosie''s beguiling voice thrives in the lush sonic landscape — in the darkly romantic,
Schubert / Buckley-esque High Moon, which invites the listener to "walk through
this wild dream"; in Galinette, about a French poodle and her dysfunctional owners
(half sung in French); in the anthemic title track, Strange Recollection, about
memory and adventure, which nods to an unlikely trio of Can, Fleetwood Mac and
Zarah Leander, but remains unmistakably in Rosie Brown territory.

Inspired in part by a road trip across America, the music weaves elements of
country and bluegrass into the Rosie Brown sound, particularly in the
heartbreaking Missouri Bluebirds; the sassy Blow the Man Down has a kind of
jazz-cowboy feel, almost Elvis meets Miles Davis; and Rosie is playing with the
blues in Hawaii, a bizarre, sexy little number that takes the listener to outer space
via a long swim through the Pacific.

The monumental Mega Fauna makes the end of "Side A" feel like the end of the
world — or at least the climax to a super-cool 1960s spy thriller. And the petrified
Walker, whose fear of war and human depravity has sent him on an eternal
journey, has taken Brown and her musicians the closest they''ve ever been to a
prog-rock vibe (albeit with an Eastern European edge). The instinctive, effortless
combination of seemingly disparate genres into a coherent "sound" is firmly
established as the Brown/Rest style on their third album.

Rosie''s vocals are sublime; sexy and hard in places, breathy and intimate usually.
Bernd''s deft guitar playing (electric, acoustic and dobro) is entrancing. The bass is
mighty, the drums are inspired, the horns are haunting, the vintage keyboards
rock. And the words talk of forever, disorientation and the great familiar skies.
