Matthew Wolff, Tenor
Matthew Wolff was one of the first and youngest artists selected for the inaugural season of the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program of the Washington National Opera Company. There he trained under the guidance of studio director, Placido Domingo and appeared on the Washington National Opera’s main stage as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, of which the Washington Post raved “Wolff took one of Opera’s toughest and most rewarding assignments… and projected a strong, virile character with an excellent voice, a fine sense of dramatic nuance and a flair for legato singing.” He also appeared with the company as the Messenger in Aida, the 2nd Nazarene in Salome, Ruiz in Il Trovatore and on the televised Washington National Opera Gala in the sextet from Don Giovanni under the baton of Valery Gergiev, and was selected to compete in the final rounds of the Operalia competition in Los Angeles in 2004
Mr. Wolff emerged from the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program in 2005, with his critically acclaimed portrayal of the Reverend Steven Hazard in the world premier of Scott Wheeler’s opera, Democracy: An American Comedy, with the Washington National Opera Company.
Now making New York City his home, he is honing his voice and skills, making frequent appearances with the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Denes Striny conducting, at Shaker Mountain Opera Festival in the Berkshires of Massachuttes. His roles there have included Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Nemorino in L’elisir d’Amore, and Alfredo in La Traviata. Critics lauded a performance “filled with realism and considerable brio” with his portrayal of Hoffman in Les Contes d’Hoffman. In Italy Mr. Wolff reprised Turiddu, in Cavalleria Rusticana appearing in a performance with the Bulgarian National Orchestra taped for RAI, stepping in at the last minute for an ailing colleague and receiving thunderous ovation and critical acclaim.
Mr. Wolff has also sung under the batons of conductors Placido Domingo, and Heinz Fricka and has worked with several prominent directors including Lofti Mansouri, John Pascoe, and Paulo Miciche, and has performed extensively as a soloist in Washington, DC, area venues including the Kennedy Center and DAR Constitution Hall.
This recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Lyric Chorus, and the technicians of EMI marks the culmination of Mr. Wolff’s study, talent, and desire to make his professional career - his life in music.
Matthew is a native of Clifton, Virginia, and has studied vocal performance at the Catholic University of America, and the Peabody Conservatory.
Denes Striny, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. where he received his B.M in Voice and M.M in Conducting, as well as completing the course work for his Ph.D in Musicology. In 2006 he received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Catholic University. Upon leaving the university he became the Head of the Music Department at Trinity College, also in DC, where he conducted the chorus and orchestra. Mr. Striny has been the Principal Conductor for the Amalfi Coast Music Festival Orchestra and Institute in Vietri sul mare, Italy, conducting in 2001 a performance of Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana with Metropolitan Opera Soprano Myra Merritt and tenor Matthew Wolff with the Bulgarian National Symphony, which was broadcast throughout Italy on RAI, “charged with electricity…Striny conducted with precision and control, leading his forces to one exciting climax after another. It was a night to remember”.
Striny was also Artistic Director of the Badia di Cava Music Festival in Cava dei Tirenni, Italy, and the Shaker Mountain Opera in Pittsfield, Mass., conducting the Albany Symphony Orchestra. In their first season, Striny conducted Richard Wagner’s Die Walkure and Gotterdammerung heralded in the press as “stunning”, “a gesture worthy of the great Wagner himself” and “an evening to write home about”. He has also conducted the Wisconsin Symphony, Juilliard Symphony, Shaker Mountain Orchestra and Chorus, Fairfax Symphony, and the Philharmonia Orchestra of London. In September of ‘09 Striny conducted the Debut Solo CD of Italian Arias with 28 year old Tenor, Matthew Wolff (one of Striny’s voice students) and the Philharmonia Orchestra of London, and the London Lyric Chorus. The recording took place in Henry Wood Hall in London.
Wearing another hat, Mr. Striny in his 20 year operatic career, distinguished himself singing leading tenor roles in many of the major opera houses in the United States, as well as in England, Germany, Japan, and Australia. Striny made his European debut with England’s Opera North as Walther in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger to great critical, Opera News called him ‘a robust and clarion Walther”. In Australia singing Don Jose in Carmen, The Australian wrote “Tenor Denes Striny’s Jose was a knockout!” The Australian Daily Mirror wrote, “Denes Striny and Maria Ewing provided a thrilling and unforgetable night out’. The Sydney Telegraph wrote, “this passioned filled production is better than anything this old town has seen. While maintaining an international operatic career, Mr. Striny also has one of New York’s most prominent voice studios, producing some of this countries most exciting young singers who are currently populating major opera houses in the United States and Europe. At one point Striny had students singing the 4 leading roles in New York City Opera’s production of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, and at the same time this was running, he had 3 students in leading roles in the Tony Award winning musical Titanic on Broadway. One of Striny’s students is Metropolitan Opera Soprano Lauren Flanigan, still with Striny after 18 years of study, and this year thrilled audiences in Barber’s Vanessa also at The New York City Opera. The New York Times wrote Ms. Flanigan’s voice was “vibrant, alluring and powerful..a great singing actress”). Flanigan will also be opening the renovated New York City Opera House in the title role of “Esther” November ‘09.
Striny’s book, Head First, which came out in May of 2007, has a Foreword written by his friend, teacher and mentor, Birgit Nilsson, who has recently passed away. The book has received International acclaim and has garnered him rave reviews in Newspapers, and Journals throughout the world, all praise his revolutionary pedagogy and insightful look into the life of an opera singer. This has led to Masterclasses in the United States, Europe, and Latin America in 2008-2009.
