Ballad singing was a huge tradition in the mountains, being sung by both men and women, expressing their most solemn, happy, or conflicted inner feelings and experiences, or just passing along a story song. Smoky Mountains Ballads gives you some of the most common ballads sung in the Great Smoky Mountains, including all time favorite and Smoky Mountain Anthem, Barbara Allen. Ruth sings 14 ballads, 6 of which are unaccompanied; her version of The Wife of Usher''s Well is eerie. Again Ruth breaks out of her usual guitar and plays penny whistle, fife, and a washboard in fine style! Keith gets to play a little fiddle and guitar again and guest guitarist Bill Mize plays his unique style on Two Sisters. Sandee Rose bows the upright bass on Winds Across the Wild Moor. Most of the ballads on this CD were "collected" here in the Great Smoky Mountains by various "songcatchers" during that period when the Smokies were being de-settled to make way for the new Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This CD is eco-friendly: no plastic except for the disc and wrapping and the package is made from recycled paper. Liner notes provide short and trivial histories of the tunes and as usual, a few old photographs depict actual Smoky Mountain balladiers.
