A Personal Note……
There comes a time for every creative artist to express their true voice at one time or another. I had dreamed of producing this project for many years, while backing scores of other artists dutifully, as a working musician, playing casuals, recordings, and shows. Although this is a necessary requirement for any musician wanting to make a living in the entertainment industry, there was a very personal, musical need inside of me that was yearning to speak for quite some time. This collection of songs is my first attempt at the fulfillment of that desire. “Heads And Hearts”, is a collection of eleven of my favorite all time love songs and ballads. They were all uniquely arranged, while retaining a touch of the flavor from the original recordings (and what a time I had trying to sift through favorites, and figure out which tunes I eventually chose!). It was quite a daunting task, attempting to share company with the likes of Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Roberta Flack, The Beach Boys, Johnny Hartman, Nat King Cole, George Gershwin, Billy Preston, etc…, while trying to take the masterpieces they had created to a new level. But what I discovered through this process is that great songs really do stand the test of time, no matter what spin you put on them! All of these tracks were conceived totally out of a pure love of creating and sharing great music, and nothing else. They were all chosen, arranged, and recorded without regard to financial benefit or mass appeal. It was no accident that I opted for a very simplistic, understated approach. Also, the sound that I wanted to capture was largely based on that of live instruments and vocals, in a small ensemble setting, without a lot of sound effects, which is quite a departure from most contemporary, commercial recordings. My professional background includes numerous settings with small groupings, so this approach felt very natural for me. There is also a common thread throughout this collection, incorporating a strong lyrical and melodic element that has proven timeless, and will continue to last, as with most recorded music of enduring value. But regardless of how personalized my method may have been, I am totally humbled by the exceptional level of skill shown by those that agreed to offer their amazing talents to be a part of this musical journey, and all of them wanting to share for the same reasons. And they all just happen to be some of the finest talent on earth, not to mention, personal friends as well. Their musical backgrounds enable them to crisscross every genre of music with unequaled ease and professionalism. They have also shared their talents with millions of listeners on many hit recordings, major artist tours, and other live concerts worldwide. I feel truly honored by their altruism to this endeavor.
Thank you all for sharing with me, and the listeners that will hear this recording!
