"Avende-Miles" Don Alberts Trio and Quartet-Chill House Music-CHM 0004-Released
October 2005.
This exciting new CD comprises a unique series of recordings featuring
the original members of the Don Alberts trio from the CD "Intuition,"
CHM 0001, with the addition of Scott Barnhill''s tenor saxophone. All
songs were composed during Don Alberts'' hiatus to San Diego providing a
definitive body of work that is interrelated in musical concept. In
all, the music is a more focused "players" format for improvisation,
thematically strong and haunting with lingering melodies and
high points. Two standards are included, Bill Evans'' "Tune for a Lyric"
and Gordon Jenkins'' "Goodbye." All others are composed by Don Alberts.
"Tarantula" is a theme written on the harmonies of John Coltrane''s
"Giant Steps." "Avende-Miles," the title track is an entirely new
compositional approach to playing that may lead you to think of Wayne
Shorter but has its own very definite intent and a surprising
interlude. "Cedar''s Inn" has an interesting ascending line that was
actually inspired from a Cedar Walton concert in San Diego with Tootie
Heath and Tony Dumas. "That Was Then" harkens to shades of McCoy Tyner
in style with a 1960''s flavor of John Coltrane. "Brother of Zin" is the
freshest of the group intended to develop a sound in a strait-ahead
six-eight feel. "Unsassa'' is a delicate jazz bossa with unusual root
movements and a "haunting refrain." The closer, "Odell Moselle" is a
dark ballad that holds the listener firm until the final liberating
arpeggio. A must for your Don Alberts collection. All songs were
recorded at Sonic Images, San Jose, Ca., March, 2003 and released for
the first time in October of 2005.
