Details:
The Danglers were formed in a basement, in the Riverwest neighborhood of Milwaukee, WI in December of 1997. The first original work the Danglers, then a trio, rehearsed was Dance of the Eggshells. From that point the Danglers would go on to perform weekly residencies at a Jazz club on Tuesday’s, a coffee house on Wednesday’s, and Rock club on Thursday’s. These shows also coincided with other performances in other clubs, basements, coffee houses, street corners, art houses, corporate luncheons, weddings, and a number of radio appearances. In April of 1998, The Danglers performed a clinic for the South Milwaukee Junior High School Orchestra on jazz improvisation and soling, which also included a performance by Junior High Orchestra accompanied by the Danglers. The event financed the Danglers’ first release, Live at Rory’s, a five song EP recorded live at Rory’s café in Milwaukee. These shows at Rory’s were happenings, literally! Anyone who experienced the group at this period experienced their raw magic. This performance schedule would fund the first Danglers studio effort Faux Kack, a four song EP which included a live take of King Crimson’s Sailor’s Tale, was recorded live at Shank Hall (Milwaukee, WI). Faux Kack solidified the Danglers place in Milwaukee’s history of original groups. The reputation of the group became one of superior musicianship and wild magical live shows. With no two shows alike, audiences either developed a love or confused state of being toward the Danglers. During this period the Danglers gained “street cred” with the release of The Suite, a split 7” single on Portland’s Primary Thoughts Records. The track included a collage of studio also marking the beginning of a relationship between The Danglers and Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes). The Suite, an improvised studio effort between John Sparrow and Victor DeLorenzo, quickly developed into The Danglers release for Primary Thoughts. The Danglers continued to perform live and write music for the release of the groups’ first full-length studio release, The Danglers s/t. Before launching into the recording of the CD, the Danglers capped off two years of constant performing with the release of Cocktales (memoirs of Milwaukee Nightlife), a full length live and rare takes CD. It was during this period The Danglers were nominated as “Best New Band” by WAMI. The Danglers, was released in July 2000 and was produced by Victor DeLorenzo, at Joes’ Real Recording in Milwaukee. The CD was released locally and gaining distribution in France and throughout Europe with Musea Records. The release put The Danglers on the road, including regular appearances in regionally, and two tours of the East Coast, including an appearance at the NEMO conference in Boston, MA. Included in the list of many CD reviews, is an 8 out of 10 star rating in Modern Drummer Magazine for the self titled CD. After yet another two years of constant performing, the Danglers took another turn in their history, adding Matt Long on Fender Rhodes and mini-moog. The new sound opened up the groups’ song writing abilities and spawned an odd ball style of pop song writing. We Had Heaven; an EP, became the Danglers’ first release as a Quartet. The EP included a live version of Phantom Kiss (originally released on The Danglers s/t) recorded at Shank Hall in Milwaukee. After performing to support the new EP and writing and recording new material, this brings The Danglers up to 2006. It has been nearly eight years since the first show at Rory’s Café in February of 1998. The Danglers currently have a new studio CD "in the can", and are searching for a supportive label for its release.
