Damion Cantrell Bio
Born in Compton and raised in Carson, CA, Damion Cantrell could have never imagined this. The 30 year old retro-soul artist is weeks away from releasing his debut album, “Setting the Mood,” and is looking to expand his fan base. He has been fortunate enough to play at a number of venues around the Los Angeles area and has impressed many loyal fans with his high-energy live performances.
Born into musical royalty (Damion’s great grandfather is the younger brother of John Mills, of the legendary Mills Brothers), he was exposed to the lifestyle at a very young age. He was taught songwriting at a very young age, spending time with his Uncle "Storm" aka Robert Daniels (Usher). Storm was taught the intricacies of the craft from Norman Whitfield (“Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”, “Poppa Was a Rolling Stone). This exposure to songwriting greatness has allowed Damion to pull from the past on his tracks, while also modernizing the formulas, forming a sound all his own. The melodies just come naturally to him, a skill that no aspiring artist can be taught.
Damion’s voice is one you would have to hear to believe; there is no way to pigeonhole this newcomer. His musical influences span a wide variety of artists, making his songs both unique and appealing to fans of soul, R&B and hip hop. Damion’s electrifying vocal style is easy to the ears, and even more impressive is that he has mastered the art of singing in falsetto, with a range not seen in many artists. His good looks, romantic lyrical content and beautiful melodies have made him a favorite of female fans throughout Southern California.
As a child and young adult, Damion was impacted by the music of the Mills Brothers, Donnie Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, among others. His style has been described as “Michael Jackson meets the Neptunes,” but his trademark soul sound is piercing, highly emotional and unique in the realm of current popular music. Damion has been able to appear on numerous rap tracks, singing hooks and accompanying many prominent west coast artists. Now is his time to show his solo skills as he steps to the forefront of the thriving Los Angeles soul scene.
Damion has had much success collaborating with a who’s-who list of established producers. On “Get To Know Me,” he has teamed up with super-producer Dave Hall (Sting, Jill Scott collaborations), and the results are nothing short of groundbreaking. On songs such as “Crazy,” Hall’s sultry beats provide the perfect backdrop for Damion to showcase his sleek vocals. The album will also feature tracks produced by Donny and Jay Gordon (Linkin Park), Ko-T (T.U.G), SPKilla + Kyze (1020 Entertainment, Room Lab Beats), Wildstyles, Lea Reis, Overdose & Cavier, Ty Scott (Babyface, LaFace Records) and T Bone.
Damion’s ability to make great music with such a wide range of producers and fellow artists is one skill that has, and will continue to, set him apart from most unsigned soul singers. Currently he is working on tracks with Jinx and Kurupt (Tha Row Records), performing live around Los Angeles and his current home of Palmdale, and putting the finishing touches on his debut album. He hopes that his unique singing style, outstanding skills on the piano and highly distinctive look will attract attention from labels. Damion says he is anxious to showcase his talent and “Set the Mood.
