A decade after the release of his first album David Aaron presents Cynical Rat Bastard, the sixth in a cycle of eclectic jazz recordings that have tracked the saxophonist’s progression from sonic experimentalist to singular composer and player.
This latest album presents the most complete picture of the musician to date. As in the past the listener is invited to press an ear to the keyhole for a heavy dose of aural voyeurism. The spectacle, however, is now framed in velvet. The Brubeckian hook of ‘For Ever Green’ or the Middle Eastern swing of ‘Schnerdle’ will invariably stick to the roof of the cranium like toffee. Despite all the toe-tapping this is still an unsettling and exhilarating place to visit. From the languorous look into the sexually charged ‘Sophia’s Diary’ to the frenetic lunacy dished up in ‘Soy Sauce Chicken on Rice’ this is ultimately an insomniac’s foray through an all-night carnival.
Cynical Rat Bastard finds Aaron resurrecting his cryptic Short Memory project. Departing from the horn-heavy ensembles of the past he engages the lush omnipresent harmonics of a guitar to offset the bite of his compositions. His distinctive reed work remains a constant though, and his tones swing from the Rubenesque to the gossamer within a beat. Intact too is the wit and vitality that make every Aaron project a bold, guilty pleasure.
Aaron has made a career of seeking out the best of company regardless of media. His playmates have included musicians Bill Ware, Deborah Harry, Roy Nathanson, Marc Ribot and Curtis Fowlkes and the Jazz Passengers, comedian Sean Cullen and choreographer Chris Ferris. He has also composed and played music for works by director/Broadway stage actress Jo Flores Chase, New York Times writer Robert Strozier, and filmmaker Fiore DeRosa
For this outing Aaron has surrounded himself with some of the finest young talent on the tear in New York. Guitarist Rob Ritchie is the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing bringing to Short Memory a delicate radiance that ultimately threatens to set things ablaze. Similarly the rhythm tandem of bass player Matt Wigton and drummer Greg Ritchie persistently catches the listener off guard. The pinpoint clarity and muscular tension that dominates the title track simply leaves one breathless.

David Aaron - Biography
David Aaron’s energy, wit and musical sensibility have allowed him the fortune of finding a comfortable home within the innumerable artistic communities of his native Toronto and adopted New York.
Gregarious and inquisitive by nature, the tenor saxophonist always finds himself in the best of company. He has worked with such formidable talents as Bill Ware, Roy Nathanson, Curtis Fowlkes & The Jazz Passengers, Deborah Harry, Kitty Brazelton’s Dadadah, Marie McAuliffe’s ArkSextet, Marc Ribot, Brad Jones, and E.J. Rodriguez. His recent involvement in the reggae/ska group Bigger Thomas and with Zozo Afrobeat (led by the multi-talented Kaleta a former member of Nigerian group Afro-JuJu) takes him once more in new directions as well as into the studio with Lauryn Hill. He also regularly works with British singer/songwriter Nick Howard, George Stass and Gavin Parker.
Aaron has never felt the need to limit his talents and regularly works with a wide spectrum of artists in a multitude of media. He composed and performed music for Fiore DeRosa’s upcoming film Distraction and for the play Fault Lines, directed by long-time Broadway stage actress Jo Flores Chase and written by New York Times writer Robert Strozier. His involvement with vocal group Crazy Love Cabaret, choreographer Chris Ferris, photographer Tom Cavalieri and comedian Sean Cullen continue to stretch his imagination.
One of Aaron’s greatest achievements has been the organization of much-needed venues for showcasing improvised music in Canada. As well as co-producing The Halifax Experimental Music Festival, his development of the weekly Khyber Jazz series impressed musicians and audiences alike and led to the successful Improv at the Khyber series, which continues in conjunction with the TD Canada Trust Atlantic Jazz Festival.
Aaron studied with saxophonists Charles Davis, Bob Mover, Roy Nathanson, as well as at The Jazzmobile and the Drummer''s Collective/Sounds of Joy workshops. He has spent the last 12 years playing with his own group, David Aaron''s Short Memory at some of New York’s top clubs including The Knitting Factory, The Bottom Line, Kavehaz, Tonic, CBGB 313 Gallery and The Apollo.

Rob Ritchie, guitar
Rob Ritchie began performing professionally at the age of 16 in his native Saint John, New Brunswick. He studied jazz at McGill University with Greg Clayton, Andre White and Kevin Dean and has performed across Canada with such artists as Don Palmer, R&B recording artist Carlos Morgan and in collaboration with filmmaker Howie Shia. He currently resides in New York where he has performed at the Knitting Factory, CBGB’s and The Bitter End.
Matt Wigton, bass
Matt Wigton studied jazz at the University of North Texas and can be found in New York playing many different styles of music; ranging from modern original music, avant-garde, jazz, pop-rock and singer/songwriter. He is the former bassist of the four time Grammy-nominated 1 O’clock Lab Band and is co-leader of the Tyler Summers Trio. Wigton has received numerous awards including a Downbeat Music Award, the UNT Pi Kappa Lambda Award and was selected as one of the nation’s emerging jazz performer/composers at the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program in 2002 at the Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C. He has more than one hundred compositions to his credit and was dubbed "a compositional talent to be reckoned with" by Cadence magazine.
Greg Ritchie, drum
Greg Ritchie studied at McGill University in Montreal where he has become somewhat of a fixture of its vibrant jazz festival. The native of New Brunswick has performed and recorded with such dynamic groups as The Francois Bourassa Quartet, The Josh Irving Quintet, The Peter Van Huffel Trio, The Christine Jensen Quintet, The Dan McCarthy Quartet and the Jean-Christophe Beney Trio featuring Steve Amirault. He currently resides in New York.
