It’s been said, if you look hard enough you will find something worthwhile. “Pure Evil” by Darkstar is that rare find! Combining raw energy with lush textures Darkstar forges a new era in modern music. Hailing from the twin cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul references to Prince are common, but the only similarities they share are the fact they both write, arrange, produce and play their own music.

“Pure Evil” Darkstars 2nd release on Darkface Records begins innocently enough with “and in the beginning”. An instrumental look into a tormented soul.

The next track “no no no” is an interestingly quirky track with lush yet dark synth textures and enough hooks to fill a tackle box.

“i knew this girl” is next, a song of lost love and deceit. Chock full of smooth piano and laced with guitar hooks.

The next selection “we are” is European pop at it’s finest. Audio imagery reminiscent of Gary Numan, Ultra Vox and Depeche Mode. It has dark guitar lying under a chilling piano.

“Pure Evil” now begins to change pace with “Can’t Take Away”. Gritty guitars and a nasty funky bass help weave a story of one woman’s penchant for drama.

The music makes a u-turn with “the box”; a rock track in the classic vibe. No keyboards here! Just straight driving hard rock!

With “Godless Jezebel” you can really begin to see the diversity of Darkstar’s writing style. Dark, lush synth tracks interwoven with metal guitar and dark brooding piano make this an industrial metal classic.

“Do You Still Care?” is the radio friendly pop track. Raw guitars, raw vocals, raw emotion! It’s all tied together with a piano hook that defies you to tap your feet. We at Darkface Records like to call this Slash n’ Dash.

That brings the listener to “Down and Dirty”. Do you like guitars? Well, they’re here, and they’re nasty. And as Darkstar says, “all of my life i’ve been waiting for someone like you, someone who tastes and feels the same way i do.”

A story of mistaken identity is explored with “And then I met You”; more slash n’ dash. In the track “Say Goodbye”, Darkstar shows more of his guitar chops. Full of raucous guitar, pounding bass, and tantalizing hooks this will soon be one of your favorites.

And in the blink of an eye comes a track reminiscent of his first release on Darkface Records. “Your taste” begins with a hypnotic piano and bass duet, with chant of “your taste, my tongue” and the opening verse of “I want your taste on the tip of my tongue, some say that your loves too strong.” It makes a statement and leaves you wondering.

“Anti-Social” is an alternative track explaining that just because he’s not out in the clubs, he’s not anti-social.

“the end of all things” is just thatâ€"a wrap of the CD with bits and pieces of every track from “Pure Evil”. So there you have it; a sometimes complex story woven into music for your ears.

“Pure Evil”â€"Whatever your preference of music you will find something to grab at your soul and make you tap your feet.
