The Difficult Kind, based in Los Angeles, features Brian Grillo and Michael Hateley, former members of legendary post-punk band Extra Fancy.
The self-titled debut 5-song EP is an intense mix of acoustic soul and flamenco fire, with songs of redemption and grace played to move the soul.
The Difficult Kind started as recording experiment and blossomed into a portrait of blue collar soul searching. As always, Grillo delivers an intense and soulful picture of life in Los Angeles in his lyrics, the beautiful and the hideous and everything in between, set to a back drop of fiery acoustic guitars, soaring electric slide guitars, and flamenco percussion.
Produced, recorded and mixed by Hateley at his home studio, the cd is a pure, raw expression of the two artists.
"We left all the good stuff in", Hateley remarks, speaking of the final 2 tracks that were recorded live. "There is definitely an authentic, raw feel to the recording that we intentionally set out to capture. We want the listener to feel like she was at a live performance, complete with all the mistakes."
