MP3 Diminishing Returns - The Lost Years

A blend of metal, acoustic/progressive rock & indie to create ''indie metal''

10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Hard Rock, METAL: Metalcore

Details:
For a band composed of four early 20s guys from the same homogenous town in Long Island, New York, DIMINISHING RETURNS has serious variance. From indie to pop-punk to classic rock to metal, the band''s members comprise different elements, different tastes and bring something unique to the musical table. The result? Well, you could probably categorize it, but it will give you more to think about than most bands out there these days.

Despite the setbacks for a band failing to be able to slap on that oh so important "For Fans of [insert three-word band in hyphenated sub-genre du jour]!" brightly colored, prominently displayed album sticker, not having that visceral reaction --derivative-of-so-and-so band-- jump out at you at first listen can be refreshing. "We like to think we''re doing something a little different," says vocalist/rhythm guitarist/young attorney dg. "It''s an adventure workshopping new songs."

Ask what they sound like and watch them squirm. No one is willing to pin it down to another band, another genre... but not for lack of trying. "I just gave up" says dg. "I just wouldn''t even know where to begin - I usually ask other people for suggestions." One thing is for sure though: DR stays true to its music, and the sound that springs forth from each particular song is truly unique from the last. There is no compromise.

The homegrown effort began in late 2003 when dg graduated college and headed back to his comfy Long Island roots. Reuniting with semi-estranged friend singer/guitarist Mike Sereno, the two began playing cover tunes and writing the stories of their time apart. The songs that would later fill "THE LOST YEARS" (DR''s completely D-I-Y debut effort), were first heard by shuffling strangers in subway stations and later at the Jones Beach boardwalk.

"We wanted to play to anyone who would listen" says dg. "I had to know that I could open up to total strangers and get that confidence up before this band had any chance of going anywhere."

The band expanded when DaveB ventured home from snowy Buffalo to rock the bass, and was later completed when local uprising talent Roger Eisenhardt signed up to bang on the drums. Everything simply exploded from there: the band landed its first few gigs at local bars before branching further out on the island and deep into the seedy underbelly of the New York City scene.

DR became a seasoned act that has played with as many different types of bands as the influences it puts into its own tunes. "We''ve played with death metal bands, indie solo artists, experimental jam...even pirates" says dg, hitting larger venues and opening for national acts.

DR has certainly gained its fair share of e-ttention, taking full advantage of the pervasiveness of internet sites like MySpace & Purevolume. After hand-recording a demo ("The Subway Demos") for the MySpace glitterati, DR manned up and hopped into the home-studio.

"THE LOST YEARS" was born: a punchy, diverse as the day is long, D-I-Y debut, self-recorded, self-produced album, on the label Sereno started for the band, ATC Records. Ten songs strong, the album is a personal recounting of that which transpired during the important years of fallout between Sereno and dg.

"THE LOST YEARS" can be found on iTunes and many other digital music sites, from Tower Records, and indie shops across the US.

"There is nothing else I want to do with my life but make music, and I will settle for nothing less," says Sereno.
