Details:
In world of New Age and Meditational music, and artist could easily make the music they write rather bland and boring. Music is the gateway to one''s soul, so why not engage the listener and open that gate and allow the full impact of what they have exposed themselves to? Having been trained in classical, jazz, improv styles Deosil (Dylan Patrick Smith to his friends) calls forth numerous influences that convey themselves in the music and wishes that his music mean more to a person than just "elevator" music.

"I wish to make music that is more than just background music. To me background music is something you hear while you are shopping at a store, or waiting in the dentist''s office. A listener should encompass themselves in their sonic environment, especially when the music contains elements that tap into one''s soul. Headphones make for a very intimate listening experience."

Although Dylan has been recording and sequencing for about ten years, with countless hours spent in the studio, scribbling down ideas, and listening to the nuances of each song, "Beyond This Plane Of Existence" is Deosil''s first time releasing a CD. Begun in 2004, it has been a year long project that has brought both the acoustical elements - including live vocalizations, percussion, and native instruments, and the electronic - drum looping, sampling, MIDI sequencing, and digital time stretching (the process by which a sample/loop is ''stretched'' digitally to match the current tempo of the song). The type of music that he offers to everyone is a collection of some of his favorite genres in the electronic world.

Ranging from serene ambience with influences from Boards Of Canada and Stars Of The Lid, to influences from Sacred Sprit and a more masterful approach to downtempo rhythms that vaguely resemble the Pilgrimage project (a group from Germany whose track titles are all in Latin). But it is two groups, in particular, that he takes his cues from the most.

"I mean, you take Enigma - look at what Michael Cretu did in 1990 with the aptly named album "MCMXC A.D." Totally revolutionized the genre of electronic/new age. In 1993 the song "Return To Innocence", from their album "The Cross Of Changes" became a worldwide hit. A simple chord structure and beat with an unforgettable vocal sample (that caused quite a bit of controversy at the time) made that song one of the most recognized new age songs ever. The same goes with Rhys Fulber and Bill Leeb, the frontmen behind Delerium. It was Mr. Leeb that changed his style dramatically from his days in Front Line Assembly to the spiritual awakening style of Delerium. "Silence", from the album "Karma", of course is their most recognized song. Giving its support was the beautiful vocalizations of Sarah McLachlan. It just goes to show that Gregorian style chanting with trip-hop like beats can be accessible to anyone. I think it was the ''Pure Moods'' series of compilation CDs that really made it easier for everyone to be exposed to this style of music."

With the release of "Beyond", Deosil (which, by the way means ''clockwise'' in celtic earth based traditions - a means of gaining positive energy) hopes that the message conveyed in each track will reach the listener and, even if one is not a fan of the generically named genre of "New Age" this album will help bridge a gap and allow a glimpse into the world of the electronic and the acoustic. It may not be an entirely new concept, but Deosil offers a very intimate listening experience and that should be engaging enough.

The door is open....Are you ready to walk through it?

Reviews:

"This Virginia Beach collagist labels himself a New Ager, but his spacious soundscapes have enough bassy intensity to land on electronica''s radar. Either way, Deosil promises healing, and that may not be too ambitious a claim. His compositions are dense and weighty, but also patient and immediately accessible."

"Deosil is able to combine slow pulse fluxuating rhythms, while amazingly handling the tonality of supple ambience and combine them along with side cousins of psy-trance New Age. I am very pleased with this project, for it stems itself away from pure ambience and gives it a new color which stand translucent from the rest. My respects to the artist, rich in soul and mind-light."
