Bio: Devin Haas
Music has played an influential role in Devin’s life, paving the way to a 10 year performance career. With his mother an avid fan of Jim Morrison and The Beatles, Devin grew up in a world constantly filled with music. He remembers his first love at 12 months old was his fathers’ Stratocaster. However, his father sold the guitar and it was the accordion he picked up at age 8. Alto sax soon followed, as well as the tuba, the piano, and eventually the guitar, harmonica, and sitar.
Growing up in Los Angeles, spending time at the beach, and in the deserts of southern California, Devin’s musical tastes formed from listening to hours of classic rock and folk music. He was strongly influenced by the music of the Buffalo Springfield and Bob Dylan, and it was ultimately the lack of modern artists in that genre of music that formed his style.
At age 12 he entered a poetry contest for a local paper and won first place. From then on he wrote poetry on a regular basis, and as a teenager won several other awards for poems. From poetry he learned to write lyrics and soon started his first rock band, The Huxlian Reduction Valve. This was the first group where he began incorporating the Sitar into live performances. The Long Beach based group Entropy was his next project, which placed Devin as lead guitarist and front man. Performing became a way to express himself, earn money and deal with adversity and injustice in his life.
Honing his songwriting skills and performing non stop helped Devin independently record, produce and release his first album, Isness at just 19. Having completed something he thought was impossible with the realization that if “Kurt Cobain can do it so can I” six album’s followed in four short years.
His first solo album Lucid Now was released in the spring of 2003, and his second CD Shipwrecked Soul was just completed in February.
Devin describes himself as a “psychedelic musician with an eclectic writing style, who explores both traditional and experimental arrangements. primarily creates rock, folk, jazz and blues music. Augmented by; an understanding of classical harmony, use of the sitar, a large number of vintage instruments, tube amplifiers, the Hammond organ, synthesizers, computers, the blues harp, djembe and a home-made Theremin.”
Live performance is where Devin shines. Improvisation plays a key factor in his sound and combines with his large body of written material to create dynamic set-lists incorporating both. A unique blend of music tastes and talents, Devin Haas is a musician setting the tone with a truly innovative style.
