LORNA ANDERSON
Glasgow-born Lorna Anderson studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Patricia MacMahon. Her many awards and prizes include First Prize in the 1984 Peter Pears and Royal Overseas League Competitions and in 1986 in Aldeburgh she won the coveted Purcell-Britten Prize for Concert Singers.
Lorna Anderson has appeared in opera, concert and recital with the major orchestras and festivals throughout Europe. In the United Kingdom she has worked with the BBC Orchestras, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The Sixteen, the English Concert, the St. James'' Baroque, London Baroque, Collegium Musicum 90, the Bach Choir, the London Mozart Players, The King''s Consort, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, London Sinfonietta under Sir Simon Rattle, the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, the London Classical Players and the Apollo Chamber Orchestra, and she has appeared at the Edinburgh and Aldeburgh Festivals.
Appearances abroad have included concerts with Ensemble InterContemporain under Pierre Boulez, La Chapelle Royale under Philippe Herreweghe and appearances at the Alte Oper, Frankfurt and with the Israel Camerata, the New World Symphony in Miami and the Academy of Ancient Music (in France and South America) and Stravinsky''s "Les Noces" both for Turin Radio and with La Chapelle Royale under Philippe Herreweghe.
She has sung Morgana ("Alcina") at the Halle Handel Festival, Servilia ("La Clemenza di Tito") with the Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra, Handel''s "Theodora" with Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Purcell''s "The Fairy Queen" with the English Concert and Monteverdi''s "Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda" with the Netherlands Opera (also filmed).
Her numerous recordings include Purcell''s "The Fairy Queen" under Harry Christophers, Haydn Masses under Richard Hickox and for Hyperion she has recorded Britten folk song settings with Malcolm Martineau, Handel''s "L''Allegro" with Robert King and she sang in Graham Johnson''s complete Schubert edition.
Her recent and future engagements include performances with the Berner Kammerchor, The King''s Consort, Hanover Band, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, La Chapelle Royale, Collegium Vocale and the Apollo Chamber Orchestra .
DAVID CHERNAIK
David Chernaik was born in the USA, and has been resident in the UK since 1972. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and the Juilliard School, New York, and has enjoyed a successful career as both conductor and cellist. He recently was invited to participate in a masterclass with Jorma Panula and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. He participated in Neeme Järvi''s Summer Academy in Estonia, where he worked with Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Jorma Panula, and Alexandr Dmitriev, conducting the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the St. Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra. He has also attended conducting workshops organised by the American Symphony Orchestra League in New York and Boston, where he worked with Daniel Lewis and Gustav Meier.
The Apollo Chamber Orchestra was founded by David Chernaik in 1989 and is one of the UK''s leading chamber orchestras. Its highly successful association with Poems on the Underground has resulted in several new commissions, two CD recordings and many original and enjoyable concerts. The ACO are currently in the second year of an innovative three-year education programme in Hackney primary schools that includes school visits, workshops and concerts. Recent concert highlights include three performances in the first "Spice Festival" at Hackney Empire, and a London concert with guest soloist cellist Robert Cohen.
The ACO''s debut recording of Mendelssohn''s "Scottish " and "Italian " Symphonies was voted Best Symphony CD in the 1994 Music Retailer''s Association Awards, and was described as "second to none " in the 1997 Penguin Guide to Compact Discs. Their third CD, Sempre Amor - Portuguese Love Songs from the Romantic Age, with soprano Lorna Anderson and the Apollo Chamber Players was released in 2002. Their recording of Saint-Saëns'' Carnival of the Animals was released in the UK in December 2005 (US publication date April 2006) as part of a children''s book+CD, with new poems and illustrations.
The Apollo Chamber Players and Apollo String Quartet form the chamber music arm of the ACO. Recent highlights include a UK tour of Berio''s Folk Songs and Portuguese Modinhas, funded by Arts Council England.
