Laura Ponce (pronounced “pone-say”) was the youngest of 3 born in Brooklyn NY. Mom is a Polish/Ukranian/Protestant/housewife. Dad, the youngest of 22 siblings, a Puerto-Rican/Catholic/NYC Transit bus driver. Add an orthodox Grandma, crazy Jewish grandpa on mom''s side and also 2 very cool PR abuelos on dad''s! The families met and settled on Manhattan’s Lower East Side (boats and all). Laura, having moved to Long Island at the age of four, has since moved back to the LES where she still lives, writes, acts and paints in her grandparents old apartment in the now private but once city income housing projects.
She began her career as she puts it "after kinda being fired from everything else." Playing instruments as a kid and naturally loving to perform, Laura secretly longed for a career in the arts but admits had a very ''blue collar" attitude about it. Scared but driven & with her brothers encouragement she quit it all to give it a shot. Without any formal training she made a video of herself hosting an MTV like show about night clubs because she felt she had to use what she had...knowledge of music and the ability to talk… A LOT! That tape helped her land her first small modeling and commercial jobs. With about 300 bucks to her name and a prayer in her heart she moved to Los Angeles on the recommendation of a female producer friend. Terrified that she was a late bloomer in a town where the fascination is on youth and where most of the competition was already on Star Search by or before the age of 12, Laura dove in head first. She booked a co-starring role on the ABC sitcom "On Our Own" and acted in numerous TV commercials but it was still music that captured her heart.
While working the door at a swanky LA nightclub Laura passed her 3 song demo to someone she had met. In true Hollywood lore, the man worked for EMI Music publishing and the hand off soon turned into a small publishing deal. This led to a new phase in Laura’s career where she had to quickly learn to write and record with other musicians. It was slightly overwhelming as she had no real experience in this and as she says, "the most important thing to me is to live to my potential."
Forever Five was written and recorded in a variety of studios in NYC over the spring of 2004. Laura’s first full length recording was a huge learning experience as she wore numerous hats as singer, songwriter, producer, executive producer and graphic designer. But now it is ready to be born and Laura is pumped about getting it out there to share with everyone.
"It has been difficult to remain true to my art and absorb an ever changing music business but I am determined. I want to put music out there that really represents the truth in myself so people can really get what they deserve. I want to give it all away... show people that it is never too late to discover yourself and feel as alive as you can - in life, joy or even pain. Success, to me, means to love and be loved. If I can inspire that - then I have truly made it. Oh and then to have my own family and save animals. Then not only will it have all been worth it, it will have been perfect."
