To bolster his limited vocal knowledge, he began voice studies with Susan Read - a former lyric soprano with the Israeli Opera Company.

From 1999 through 2001, J. Marty served as organist at Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. While at Calvary, he administered the tenth anniversary concert series, celebrating Calvary''s Grand Organ, the world''s fourteenth largest pipe organ.

J. Marty graduated from St. Olaf College with a BM in Church Music. There he studied organ with John Ferguson, choral conducting with Robert Scholz and Anton Armstrong, and sang in the St. Olaf Choir. Currently, he is at Indiana University for further musical study in organ performance (with Larry Smith and Marilyn Keiser) and choral conducting. He sings in the early music ensemble, Pro Arte, led by John Poole, former conductor of the BBC Singers.
