SCORCHED SENTIMENTS

John and I have been the best of friends for a long time. So much so, that we’ve never really let anyone get close enough to bridge our friendship. Until last summer.

An acquaintance of mine named Mitch, who heard some of my music, told me that Andy was a good singer/songwriter and that I should look him up. So I did, and this album is the result of our collaboration over the last year. To say that John and I have both gotten close to Andy is an understatement. I feel like I’ve known him forever, and I believe John feels the same way. We had one introductory session in July of 2005 and never looked back. That’s why the music works – we like each other’s songs and the chemistry among us allows our creativity to flourish.

Andy’s musical influences are somewhat different from mine. His musical taste is wrapped around the grit and soul of Neil Young, Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead, and his melodies and lyrics are representative of intense introspection. To watch him perform live is an experience not to be missed. His energy level seems to climb as the music progresses, and his relation to the audience intensifies as he delivers each of his songs with passion and verve. That same intensity is also present in the studio recordings heard here.

John and I, on the other hand, embraced Paul Simon, Dan Fogelberg, Cat Stevens and James Taylor, opting for finger-picked ballads rather than hard-strummed songs. John has been my singing voice over the years; I was blessed with the gift of music but wasn’t much of a singer. His smooth articulation and melodic singing style are a delight to those who have heard him sing.

As a beginner on the guitar at the age of 12, I completely ignored artists like Dylan in favor of Peter, Paul & Mary and The Beatles. Only now, many years later, have I come to a full understanding of what those artists had and still have to offer. Which brings me to the meld of Andy’s musical style with mine – it was a magical collision waiting to happen.

This recording is about sentiment – ideas colored by emotion. From the abusive and desperate struggle of promising freedom in "Ann Marie", the bleak state of mind belonging to a man named "Jamie Moore", to the heartfelt speculation of loss in "If You Were Gone", and the belief that hope springs eternal in "Fountain of Youth", we have attempted to take you on a musical journey charged with narrative feeling. We added a little fun too, with the fourth offering on the album, "Why Don’t We Let Mama Sleep In".

These songs are very real for us. They capture encounters that we’ve had on our walk through life, and bring meaning to those events through the medium of music. It is our hope that you enjoy this compilation, and that you can relate to some of what life has taught us through our experience.
