For many young people at the time, the 60''s began not with the Beatles or the Cuban missle crisis, but with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Political upheaval, anti-war demonstrations and musical change went hand-in-hand, giving birth to a whole generation of legendary garage bands. One of these was a group called THE KNAVES, whose 1967 single, "Leave Me Alone", originally recorded on the Dunwich label (now available through https://www.tradebit.com)has been hailed as a classic of the early punk-rock genre. After the Knaves disbanded, drummer Gene Lubin turned to singing/songwriting, styling much of his material after some of his own favorite groups...the Doors, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, and others. Although the Viet Nam war officially ended in 1973, Lubin had a number of anti-war songs he''d written earlier. It was 1974 before he was able to pull a new group of musicians together to record some of this material at Ter-Mar, the old Chess Records studio, under the direction of legendary Chess Records engineer Malcolm Chisolm.
It wasn''t until 2001 that Gene finally got around to transfering the old recordings from a 1/2 inch mono master copy to digital and releasing them on a CD entitled "End of the Spectrum", which he sells through CDBABY at https://www.tradebit.com
In the last five years, Track 1 from the CD, "RUSSIAN MAN" has become something of an Internet hit as far as anti-war songs go, thanks to the exposure it received through an award winning video documentary about surfing, of all things. The film, by Hawaiian film maker Chad Campbell,is called ''5TH SYMPHONY DOCUMENT'', and it was voted "Best Video of the Year" in SURFER MAGAZINE''S 2001 Reader''s Poll. In recent years Lubin''s music interests have shifted to reggae. In the 80s he founded Chicago''s first record label devoted exclusively to reggae. This year (2006)he released a reggae/rock cover version of the old DOORS potboiler, "Maggie McGill", which is also available from https://www.tradebit.com
