"Hal Russell was just beginning to achieve a modicum of international recognition at the time of his death in 1992. He was the last person one would have expected to record for ECM but he did. And he did it on his own terms. But simultaneously with that period of "fame," Russell also played in this group with "punk" Jazzers (their own term) Organ and Walter. This was the original edition of the Luttenbachers (subsequent editions have included Ken Vandermark, among others) and the trio forged some molto manic music.
"The music from this live radio set is unrestrained to the max. Russell''s between song announcements, with Walter and Organ carousing in the background, give the impression of sheer anarchy in the studio. But, lest one get the wrong impression, this is not a mere free Jazz blowout...In typical Russell fashion, once the themes are discarded, the field is wide open. But, it''s interesting that Organ will occasionally refer to the thematic material during his high-energy solos. Walter is an out-of-control perpetual motion machine. He pushes the music forward in frantic fits and starts. In this company, Russell shows no restraint. One gets the impression that he really enjoyed playing with these guys.
