Linda Joy Thomas spent the first eighteen years of her life in Oregon. Then it was off to Hawaii for nearly two years, then up to Alaska for sixteen where all three of her children were born, Kevin, Brandon and Jennifer.
It was in 1989 that Linda bought her first piano. Her desire to write music grew more and more, but with very little formal training, it was difficult to put on paper. Frustrated, she put her desire to write music on hold. Even more difficult was even finding the time to practice on her piano with having to work two jobs and take care of three small children.
After becoming single, Linda decided it was time for a change of scenery, (shoveling snow was just too much work!)
and headed for Washington for nearly a year. Feeling the urge that it was time to move on, she ended up in St. George, Utah nearly eight years ago.
Desiring to still write music, she met a wonderful lady, Anne Buys, who patiently taught her how to put the notes on paper. Having found it difficult to express her feelings and emotions verbally most of her life, she was now able to express them through her music.
Linda first composed betrayal after being betrayed by someone she respected, admired and looked up to. Having no one to talk to that day, it was her piano who patiently waited and listened to the betrayal she was feeling inside. Now, with the help of her piano, she was finally able to express her feelings and emotions through her music. In just a few short weeks, all eleven songs that make up the collection of "I Am Someone...A Musical Celebration Of Who We Are" were composed. Each song has its own story. Unspoken words that give each song its breath. These stories are found on the inside of the CD insert. Then Linda came across a story out of the "Chicken Noodle Soup For The Soul" book that tied everything together for her and inspired the half-clay face found on her CD insert. The story was about the golden Buddha.
Back in 1957 in Bangkok, a group of monks had to relocate a huge clay Buddha from their temple to a new location. When the crane attempted to lift the giant idol, the weight of it was so tremenduous that it began to crack. The monks fearing the idol would fall and break, lowered it back to the ground. One of the monks noticed a golden gleam coming from one of the cracks in the clay. After fetching a chisel and hammer and knocking away part of the clay, the monk discovered the clay Buddha was really solid gold!
It is believed that several hundred years earlier, the Burmese army was about to invade Thailand and the monks fearing their precious golden Buddha would be looted, covered it with clay in order to hide it. Unfortunately, all of the monks were killed, along with their secret of the golden Buddha until that day in 1957, where it is now found in a Buddhist temple in Bangkok. The solid golden Buddha is ten and a half feet tall, weighs two and a half tons, and is worth over 196 million dollars!
When we think about it, we are all like the clay Buddha, covering ourselves with a shell of hardness which we create out of fear. Fear of showing others who we really are. Yet underneath everyone''s clay shell, is a golden Buddha just waiting to shine forth. No matter what we have already been through in our lives, or may continue to go through, it is our task now to chisel away the clay we have covered ourselves with just as the monks did back then, and not only rediscover who we are, but celebrate who we are!
We all have a story. But that''s all it is, a story. Though Linda''s story speaks of betrayal and stormy weather, it also speaks of letting go, believing in oneself, and most important of all, being able to smile again! She''s not saying that we shouldn''t tell others our stories or not feel them. She believes that some people just get stuck in their stories and either can''t seem to move on, or don''t believe they can. What Linda hopes to share with others through her music, is to not focus so much on our stories, that we forget who we are and what we are capable of. So let us ALL celebrate who we are!
