Understanding the music business

Are you interested in making strides for a career in the music business industry? If you are looking for a new career in 2013, it's not enough to just have media contact information, or to have studied in a music education program. What you need for a career in the music business is the news. You need your ear attuned to the major record labels and their major activities; management and development events, information about their programs, artists and services, and a sense of how to read the music and entertainment business.

Choose your path wisely

There are two well defined pathways to a career in the music business. There are some students who major in music. They played a musical instrument or sang and realized at some point that as musicians, they would not have a major career even though the admissions office at their school accepted them for an undergraduate degree. These students, as alumni, often returned to further their programs of study by then taking courses in business and marketing and sometimes if available, music and entertainment administration and services. With help from knowledgeable faculty and hard work from a creative student, one can transfer their major from music into being successful at music business administration.

Going the higher education route

Then there are the students who don't have the music background, but instead majored in business or marketing. Their studies and curriculum with other like-minded professionals in their majors included global business studies, group research in economics and global economies, summer jobs with companies developing their marketing and press, internet technology, and copyright law skills.

The music machine

Although it may seem like the music business industry is a creative place where international recording artists are signed by a professional label and the breakthrough story of success is made (much like any marketing youtube video, Facebook fan site or twitter post will have you believe), the music business is both tough to read and tough to learn. It takes a combination of academics: degree studies (graduate or undergraduate) at a world ranked campus for music business and music technology (such as Berklee School of Music), as well as careers: search for a job and apply, often for a free summer internship, for a company that will give you support (hopefully financial too, but not always) in your first strides to have a career in radio, press, music, records, film and other available jobs for college students interested in the both academics and the arts.

World of opportunities

As the annual number of applicants breaks records of highs every year for those looking for performing opportunities or to make a performance career as an artist, whether jazz, pop, rock, or any other style, there will also be a need for people to set up production companies, record labels and other music resources on the business side of the market. If you are interested in a career in music business administration, don't hesitate to visit a big music city center such as LA, New York or Chicago. Request a direct visit with a music center, or even a music hall. See if there is a director of programming that is available to meet with and discuss how to make your career goals a reality. The more information you can get before you leave home and embark on a music business career, the more you will be prepared.

It can be done

A career in the music business industry is not unattainable. It takes perseverance and hard work. It takes insider knowledge. It takes the heart to chase a career that can make or break some. But it is a career that is also extremely rewarding. Using your business knowledge to foster artistic creativity can offer wonderful opportunities to very deserving artists. If you are interested in beginning your future with a career in the music business industry, you've come to the right place for your journey to begin.
