Details:
Back from its recent appearance at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, Lionz has been touring the east coast for more than two years. Lionz is in a constant state of exploration – always adding the works of new musical influences to the song repertoire and welcoming new guest musicians to their stage. Previous well-known guests have included Reverend Jeff Mosier (Blueground Undergrass), Dave Blackmon (frequent Widespread Panic guest), and the late blues legend Neil Pattman.

The band members, who played bars, clubs, and theaters for more than 10 years prior to forming Lionz, have been interacting with each other musically for more than five years in various conglomerations. Today, the perfect mix of personalities and talents is together and has become what is now known as Lionz.

Lionz started with a knock at the wrong door. Jefferson Taffet, the lead singer and primary lyricist, was looking for another musician who lived on his street and accidentally knocked on Daniel Marler’s door. Raised in Auburn, Alabama, by a mother who teaches piano, Daniel has been playing music his whole life. Jefferson, who coincidentally worked with Daniel’s identical twin brother, Drew, had heard Daniel was a college graduate with a music degree. He asked him to become the lead guitarist in a band he was forming, which was then known as Lions from Zion. Daniel agreed.

A couple of weeks after meeting Daniel, Jefferson was at a Grateful Dead tribute concert featuring Athens-based Cosmic Charlie and knew he wanted one of their drummers, Nate Hale, to join the new band. He approached Nate, whom he had never met, and asked him to join him at rehearsal the following week. Nate agreed.

Lions from Zion went on to play together for several years with many different lineups, but then things changed.... New to the Athens music scene, Damian Kapcala—keyboardist extraordinaire from Columbia, Maryland—joined forces with Daniel in a band known as Field Trip. Damian and Daniel quickly learned how to combine their original and powerful sounds through crowd-pleasing improvisational jams. Jefferson met Damian at a Field Trip show in Macon, Georgia, and knew immediately Damian would be a positive addition to the lineup. The band then decided to take things more seriously and marked the occasion by changing the band’s name to Lionz.

Damian has many musical side projects, which led to one of the final pieces of the Lionz puzzle being filled. Athens resident Jon Joiner, months away from graduating college with a music degree, joined Nate Hale on drums, adding to the band the double-drummer dynamic that few bands have the opportunity to take advantage of. Just as Lionz was seeking a new bass player for hopefully the last time, Jefferson and Damian’s roommate, Stephen Spivey (formerly Tishamingo), was ready for a new band. Spivey was brought on board after he already had the experience of an international tour, which has helped the band evolve once again.

Having recently releasing their debut CD, Stranger Things Have Happened and fresh off two February radio appearances, two-time Athens Flagpole Music Awards winner Lionz is anxious to get back into the studio to work once again with engineer/producer David Barbe (Drive By Truckers). As the crowds continue to grow (over 10,000 website visitors in 2005), so does the Lionz music, and the enjoyment for all.
