Lee''s fourth recording, Fertile Ground is strong on instrumental guitar music, with the ragtime "St Louis Tickle" and several traditional Irish, Scottish tunes, including two by Turlough O''Carolan.
Fertile Ground featured a number of maritime tunes to foreshadow his later "plunge" into Great Lakes maritime music: The first release of "The Christmas Ship," plus a haunting vocal chorus singing "The Eastland," a song written by Tom & Chris Kastle, to a melody by O''Carolan.
Two more traditional songs with a maritime background are also featured -- "Lady Franklin''s Lament" and "Lakes of Pontchartrain."
The title song was written by Doug Miller when he worked as founder of the Adler House in Libertyville, Illinois. It''s a lovely song which deserves to be heard, sung and recorded by more folks.
