Details:
David Leinweber has entertained in a wide variety of venues over the years, both in solo and ensemble settings. His tasteful, professional backup acoustic lead-work has been highlighted at numerous shows throughout the Atlanta area. He is a multi-year winner at the prestigious ‘old time music’ contest held each fall at Athens State University in Alabama. He is a seasoned music teacher, with years of experience teaching in both group and private settings.

Accomplished in both flatpicking and fingerpicking guitar styles, Leinweber’s new CD Old World Folk: Folk Songs and Instrumentals from the British Isles connects his love of history with his love of music, highlighting original arrangements of popular English, Irish, and Scottish folk songs. The project includes well-worn gems such as “Star of the County Down,” “Soldier’s Joy,” “Flowers of Edinburgh,” “Molly Malone,” “Lavender Blue,” and “Scarborough Fair.” Old World Folk also features two popular Leinweber originals -- the hilarious “Fake Your Sincerity,” which shows his lyrical wit, and the instrumental “West Country Rag,” showcasing skillful fingerpicking on the Martin HD-28 guitar. Through the magic of studio overdubbing, Leinweber handles all the instrumentation on Old World Folk.

A trained classical pianist, Leinweber is also a knowledgeable and engaging performer of North American traditional piano idioms, including gospel, ragtime, boogie, blues, country, and rock and roll. His piano recording of hymns, Sunday Morning Favorites, has moved congregations and general audiences throughout the Atlanta area. Kathy Parsons, of Solo Piano Publications, wrote that “Sunday Morning Favorites was obviously a labor of love and faith, and if you are looking for a really nice collection of solo piano hymns, I recommend this one.”

As an Associate Professor of History at Oxford College of Emory University, Dr. Leinweber especially enjoys blending his expertise in history with his love of music. Audiences young and old have enjoyed the informative remarks that frequently accompany his musical renditions, delivered with his easy-going style, and his background of twenty years of experience in the college classroom. He has a range of special presentations on historical/musical themes, including the Music of the Civil War, the Music of the American West, the Hymns of Fanny Crosby, and Medieval ballads. He has delivered scholarly papers on the history of folk music.
