Freeana''s debut CD, "A WOMAN''S CHANT" is in a class by itself, a MAGICAL, HEALING POWER MUSIC appealing to those on some kind of spiritual quest or journey of sorts or self-healing of any kind. The album has often been listened to and used by holistic practitioners or workshop leaders to help create the healing space as well as by those who love to hear passionate, soulful, organically inspired music.
With training in Western, Middle-Eastern and Indian music, this most unusual and expressive vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/composer has truly presented a one-of-a-kind musical journey through a unique soundscape incorporating pulsing dumbek and percussion grooves, warm synthesizer textures and delicately ornamented melodies from her alto recorder.
The sounds on tracks such as "Tribal Woman" and "Promise of Joy" move from a serene, timeless drone to an exciting, hypnotic, trance-like, dancing peak!
The introduction to "Twilight" is extraordinary in the use of her unique, evocative, fluttering hand-whistle, like a birdsong combined with the alto recorder evoking a serene summer evening by a pond.
BIOGRAPHY:
Freeana is a Cambridge, MA based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser whose music comes from a very deep, passionate, soulful place. Her music has been described as "uplifting", "eloquent", "unique" and "healing" to many audiences.
Freeana is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music where she majored in viola performance and minored in saxophone. Freeana was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic while still a student and also toured with them and played at various venues including Carnegie Hall.
After graduation, she wanted to explore the music inside of her. In support of this she committed much time to writing and improvising freely for many years. The instruments she was drawn to were the recorder, voice and dumbek. Freeana possesses a prodigious talent on her alto recorder, every note and phrase singing, a continuation of the magical, lilting voice she possesses. Her music is truly very inspiring to hear.
Freeana''s improvisations with voice and recorder at times sound Middle-Eastern or Indian, played or sung in a very free, expressive fashion. Freeana''s voice and recorder show tremendous musicality, every note singing in the true sense of the word. Her music also encompasses a range of ritual sounds to beautiful melodies with sensitive lyrics to catchy instrumentals. Freeana is also a talented dumbek player and at times sings and drums simultaneously, creating that primitive, chant-like sound drawing in the audience. Freeana has also created on "A Woman''s Chant," her debut CD, a language all her own that speaks in syllables where the words don’t matter; it’s the underlying emotion and essence that springs forth and provides meaning.
Freeana has performed extensively in the Boston and New England area, playing solo performances as well as collaborating with other musicians in different styles and genres. She has been playing music in some form or another for 37 years. The last 23 years have been devoted to her own musical compositions and improvisations. Freeana is presently recording her second CD.
My Philosophy about Music:
For me, music is something that transports me in the process of creating and playing to a place where I completely disappear, lost in the sound and spontaneous, flowing ideas, whether I’m composing, improvising, writing poetry, etc. Creativity is effortless, flowing from beyond through myself when I am open to receive what wants to come through. I feel in the flow, channeling divine beauty and energies as if I were taking dictation from a source beyond myself. There are no “shoulds” or inhibitions in this space and certainly no judgements. All of that disappears and is unimportant.
Sometimes I am quite surprised at what I tap into and I only write or compose when inspiration strikes which is most of the time. I have made it my mission in life to honor and be true to myself and to learn directly from the Source, the Universe which is where the music comes from anyway. I feel that part of my purpose here is to create healing, inspiring, uplifting sounds that may positively enhance one’s life in the moment and it certainly enhances mine.
Music for myself is my healing path, my oasis in life that helps me to keep in balance and sane. It is not something I chose, it chose me. It has always been more than a calling. It is my lifeline and creates deep meaning for me and a sense of who I am and what’s truly important.
I offer this music in the spirit in which it came to me and may it aid you upon your journey through this life.
