Still fairly new to the Toronto independent music scene, Fire Hydrant is a band that has yet to be pigeonholed. Their repertoire contains hard-edged rockers, moody space trips and upbeat dance grooves! Satirical one minute and dead serious the next, you never know what to expect.
The band was formed in late 2004 on a weekend getaway in exotic Barrie, Ontario. Determined to translate the numerous tunes conceived by Jon Sohn (vocals, guitar), Douglas Adams (vocals, guitar) and Dan Purpura (drums) during summer sessions at Corner Quadrant Studio into a live show the trio enlisted bassist Mark Brown to round out the group.
February 2005 was their debut at the Poor Alex, sharing the stage with Winter Equinox and The Good Ideas for a showcase at "Pitter Patter Nights." "The show was fantastic, not only because the venue was filled close to capacity, which is always nice, but also because the crowd really got into the set," recalls Sohn "In Toronto, it''s tough enough getting people to stand near the stage. Getting them to dance was something I wasn''t really expecting."
Since then, Fire Hydrant has played relentlessly on the Toronto circuit, opening for acts like Bluescreen, The Ghost Is Dancing, Tele and Remainameless. "One good thing about our diverse sound," says Sohn "is that we are able to play in a variety of venues with a lot of different types of acts."
Adams believes that the band''s greatest asset is their live show "Jon just stands over on the side and does his thing which gives the rest of us plenty of room to move around. If you can''t win the crowd over with your music, you have to give them something to look at. When you come to one of our shows, you''re going to get a lot of energy."
In 2006, Fire Hydrant will release their debut album "Better Late Than Never". The record covers a variety of styles that the band has been experimenting with. Tracks like Shortage and Riding Bears show the complexity and maturity of their sound. Cassie and Old Habits have darker lyrics with rich nostalgic overtones. Believe, the opening track, is an optimistic declaration of love, and the crowd favourite Robots for Dinner is surely going to make you smile.
With new bassist Nidhan Grewal in tow, the band hopes to play more shows than ever and build on their array of sounds. "To be honest," says Sohn "we''re just getting started."
