MP3 Feet Music - Assertions & sketches

Ambitious two reeds and percussion trio perform original music ranging from denser melody-driven forms with varied sections to more abstract free-floating soundscapes

16 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Free Jazz, JAZZ: Weird Jazz

Details:
Initiated with the goal of exploring and reinterpreting the music of Ornette Coleman, Feet Music, a trio of two reeds and percussion, came to develop a highly original sound featuring the extended, melody-driven, and stylistically varied compositions of saxophonist Allen Livermore and the sparser free-floating sound works of drummer Michael Szekely (Livermore and Szekely, who have collaborated on various projects for over 10 years, currently drive the ALMS Trio, whose CD release "Advocates" is also available on CDBaby).

Voted "Best Jazz" by the Hartford Advocate, Feet Music also performed throughout the New England region and the greater New York City metropolitan area, with regular stints at the Buttonwood Tree "for years, a center for improvised music in Connecticut" and NYC''s Knitting Factory, in the mid-90s, among other venues. Other collaborations and performances have featured such notables as Anthony Braxton, Ed Mann, Stephen Haynes, and Taylor Ho Bynum.

"Operating far afield of four square rhythms and bebop''s harmonic filigree, an unfashionable minimalism abounds in the work of Feet Music. They boil down influences as disparate as Jelly Roll Morton, Morton Feldman and Bill Dixon to an elemental form that utilizes tradition for more than a meal ticket...

Asked to cite a comparison for this group, one is left wondering what kind of music Sol Lewitt might have made if he had taken up the tools of jazz improvisation and been introduced to Gunther Schuller circa 1960...

When listening to this disc one takes note of a distinctly non-academic and uncommercial brand of classicism, which is heard most clearly in the unaffected instrumental articulations and willingness to explore traditional musical soundscapes with patience and sincerity..." (Gerald Hartnett, liner notes, "Assertions & Sketches")
