At some point, everyone grows up and over the past fifteen years, Cowboys & Indians, mainstays of the Dallas music scene, have grown up too. Cowboys & Indians began their career as a Bob Wills-inspired western swing band complete with a big lineup and a reputation for putting on big shows. But with time, Cowboys & Indians have matured with a sleeker, more streamlined sound.
After a brief hiatus, Cowboys & Indians are back and focused on creating songs delivered with a straightforward sense of honesty. C&I still put on great live performances, but the focus now is more on the songwriting and the music.
Lead singer, Erik Swanson, says the new approach is working, “I was afraid folks would miss the horns, but it seems like people really respond to the pared-down honesty of our new material.” Joining Swanson in the C&I line-up are long-time bassist Larry Reed (bass); and Marc Daigle (lead guitar) and Todd Unruh (drums), both of whom were recruited in 2004.
Response to the new sound has been overwhelmingly positive and helped propel the band into the finals of this year’s Shiner Rising Star best regional band competition.
The new, self-titled album, Cowboys & Indians, draws on a diverse range of influences including deserted Texas highways, lonely train beats, Zydeco and the sonic influences of Americana greats: Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Gram Parsons, and Merle Haggard. The album features new favorites from the live shows like “Hillbilly Rock”(the first single), “This Old House:, and “Dead in the Tracks”, alongside reworked, refreshed arrangements of old C&I favorites such as “Lassoed in El Paso” and “Some Memories Die Hard.”
The new CD is just a sample of things to come. C&I are touring regionally to support the album and preparing to go back into the studio to begin work on their fourth release
