THIS IS PRIMO STUFF, BABY!!! A new address (he''s bought a farm in Pennsylvania), a grand concert piano, rhapsodies, and new CD, "Cornsmoke" has made some interesting changes in his life, and his music! "Musical Philanthropy" is an aural expression of those changes. It is a totally different direction for this philanthropic flute player and his musical mentor, Steve Brown. Brown''s keyboard collaborations create a sound, which brings to mind R Carlos Nikai''s early work with Peter Kater. It is unlike anything "Cornsmoke" has produced before. The compositions have a maturity and depth that are, at once, distinctive, and at the same time, familiar. Accessible, but certainly not commonplace. Steve Brown''s piano and synthesizers provide a wonderful landscape in which Cornsmoke''s Native Amercan flute playing can project powerful musical images. The phrasings are interesting and "fresh". The music is wonderful! Although almost all the cuts on this album are good, stand-outs include "Landscapes"(the opening cut) "Musician Magician"(A sophisticated blend of magic, piano and flute) and "Cross Culture Blues"(blues? Yes, blues - very interesting!) The only cut that is out of sync here is Cornsmoke''s inclusion of "Over the Rainbow" from the Wizard of Oz. It''s not that it''s a bad rendition of the song. It just seems out of place in the context of this CD. With that one exception, his latest new album is exactly what we''ve come to expect from this talented musician. "Musical Philanthropy" is Gary "Cornsmoke" LaCorte''s fifth album. It is the fifth installment of a musical journey that continues to get better and better with each and every album! ....WHISPERING WIND MAGAZINE.
