Out of the Glen

1. The Last of the Mohicans - Main Theme/The Gael
(Trevor Jones, Fox Music/TCF Music Publishing/ASCAP)
(Dougie Maclean, Limetree Arts& Music)
The band opens the CD with a movie theme from the Oscar award-winning movie, The Last of the Mohicans. This piece has become very popular at our concerts and is accompanied by our keyboard “Virtual Orchestra.” The opening highlights our drum corps’ talent led by John Davis and features Dave Boesch, our bass drummer, on the drum kit.

2. 4/4 Set
Cabar Feidh (Trad., Paterson’s Publications)
Scotland the Brave (Trad., Paterson’s Publications)
We’re No’ Awa’ Tae Bide Awa’ (Trad., Paterson’s Publications)
No CD by Cabar Feidh Pipe Band could be considered complete without this powerful tune, Cabar Feidh our trademark, followed by everyone’s favorite Scotland the Brave and wraps up with a traditional Scots melody,
“We’re not going away to stay away.”

3. 6/8 Set
Angus MacKinnon (P/M D.S. Ramsay, Paterson’s Publications)
Rab’s Wedding (J. Kerr, Paterson’s Publications)
Any pipe band in the world today has a set of 6/8 marches and certainly includes a tune or two from the great master P/M Donald Shaw Ramsay. Here we play our most recent favorites in a set.

4. Medley 2005
Murdoch McAllister (Robert MacNeil, MacNeil Musicworks)
Campbeltown Kiltie Ball (John MacLellan, Paterson’s Publications)
MacArthur Road (Trad.)
Brenda Stubbert (Jerry Holland, Bob Worral)
I Will Go Home to Kintail (Trad., Paterson’s Publications)
Snug in the Blanket (Trad., Vale of Atholl Music)
Rocking the Baby (Trad., P/M Terry Tully)
All the best styles of highland bagpipe music rolled into an eclectic, prize winning medley.

5. Titanic Suite
Hymn to the Sea (James Horner, EMI)
My Heart Will Go On (James Horner, EMI)
From the Oscar award winning movie Titanic,
Mr. Eric Rigler is featured on Uillean Pipes and Irish Low Whistle. The band adds Highland Pipes and orchestration to what is certainly one of the world’s
most popular themes.

6. Solo - Cameron Stewart
Death of a Space Piper (Grier Coppins, Rare Air)
Old Hag at the Kiln (T. Tully, P/M Terry Tully)
One of our talented young pipers shows his control and mastery of the instrument as well as his talent for showmanship and entertaining the crowds at concerts. Once we heard the title of his opening tune from this selection, we couldn’t help adding some special effects to make the scene complete.

7. 9/8 Set
Bathgate Highland Games (R. Abbott, ISA Music)
Heights of Dargai (J. Wallace, Paterson’s Publications)
A traditional tune celebrating a Highland Games near Glasgow where the band competed in the World Championships in 2000. This is followed by a tune of glory commemorating the bravery of piper George Findlater who continued to pipe the Gordons regiment into battle at Dargai (while he himself was seriously wounded). His bravery earned him the Victoria Cross.

8. Solo - Skyler Blakeslee
Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shores (Trad.)
The Hag at the Churn (Trad.)
Humors of Whisky (Trad.)
Elizabeth Kelly’s Delight (T. Tully [arr.], P/M Terry Tully)
One of our youngest members of the band and a medal- winning soloist, Skyler opens his solo set with a Traditional Irish Slow Air followed by a set of jigs that are sure to get your feet tapping and your hands clapping along with the music.

9. M.S.R.
P/M Tom McAllister (Trad., Hugh MacPherson)
Arniston Castle (Trad., Paterson''s Publications)
Alick C. McGregor (G.S. McLennan, Paterson’s Publications)
A true test of any pipe band’s fundamental skills the world over is to master these three tune idioms - the March, Strathspey and Reel, hence MSR. The band demonstrates their competition form here with a great march followed by two lively Highland dance tunes in the Strathspey and Reel.

10. Solo - Justin Celek
Lament for Donald of Laggan (Trad., Kilberry )
Piobaireachd (Gaelic for piping) is an ancient form of bagpipe music that begins with a theme (Urlar or ground) followed by variations. Here Justin Celek, shows his medal-winning form, as he presents the beautiful ground, on a finely tuned bagpipe, of the Lament for Donald of Laggan; composed by Patrick Mor M’Crimmon in memory of Donald of Laggan - born in 1543, died, aged 102, on 2 February, 1645, the day of the battle of Inverlochy.

11. Trio
Steam Train to Mallaig (Mary Ann MacKinnon, ISA Music)
Three of our prize-winning pipers have fun with a great tune composed by Mary Ann MacKinnon.

12. Hector
Hector the Hero (J. Scott Skinner, James Hunter)
Setting the scene around the campfire down in South Africa during the Boer War, Steve Stewart, one of our tenor drummers, sets the stage with some fine guitar playing. Skyler follows on harmonica and the pipes, led by P/M Alan Weidlich, complete the scene of this salute to Sir Hector MacDonald...
“...a crofter’s son, began his military career as a private in the British army, and later became a Major General. Hector MacDonald fought in the Afghan war and both Boer wars. Distinguished himself when he saved the British army from total destruction at the Battle of Omdurman.” ''" Richard Reincke

13. 3/4 Set
The Green Hills of Tyrol (J. MacLeod, Paterson’s Publications)
When the Battle’s O’er (W. Robb, Paterson''s Publications)
Lochanside (John MacLellan, Paterson''s Publications)
“The Green Hills of Tyrol is one of the best known, and oldest, tunes played by pipe bands today. It was originally from the opera ‘William Tell’ by Rossini, but was transcribed to the pipes in 1854 by P/M John MacLeod, after he heard it played by a Sardinian military band when serving in the Crimean War with his Regiment, the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders.”
''" Bram van Melle

14. Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound... These immortal words first penned in a poem by John Newton in 1772 became forever connected with the great highland bagpipe in 1972. That’s when the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards released their single on a late night radio station, it went on to reach Number One in the UK Charts, and became an international sensation overnight, selling over a million copies!

15. Highland Cathedral (U. Roever/M. Korb, Gema/MCA Music)
The band closes this album with a great thematic piece. The beautiful accompaniment brings the selections full circle and closes out our debut CD with a fine example of pipes and orchestra.
