Captain “T” is the alterego of one “Tom Hunnicutt”, who currently resides in Williford, Arkansas. Tom was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Arkansas with his mother, brothers and sister at age 11. From that point on Tom was raised in the Opposition Community, just off Spring River, where he played, fished, trapped and enjoyed life as a teenager. He attended school in one of the old “One Room School Houses” where the teacher taught all the grades up through the eight grade. His mother, Odell Linda Perry Hunnicutt raised nine of her eleven children right there in Opposition.
Tom learned to play the guitar as a young boy and started singing early in his life and he tells us he’ll be singing when he dies most likely. He first started singing all the old Gene Autry tunes, but as time passed he found himself copy cating all the country and folk singers of his day. In 1956 he joined the United States Marine Corps and served twice in South Vietnam. Even during his combat days all the country boys took their music boxes with them and jammed in places most of us would never consider. Just imagine sitting on a bunker playing away with someone yelling, “Hey, you nuts, that is INCOMING!!!” Well, they just moved inside, but kept playing, as if it was more important than heading for cover.
The songs on the CD, The Early Years, take in is first time into a recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee at Hill Top Studio where he worked with the legendary Johnny Gimble from Texas. It also has three songs on it that were co-written, which was unusal for him, as it is like a lone wolf when it comes to writing and singing his music. Yet, from time to time someone captures his attention and he ends up getting involved with their creative sides.
Captain “T”s music is unpretentious and home grown with a few laughs and tears, but it will take you back in time to the good old days. To Fight a War was written about a young Marine, Sergeant Larry Duke, who died in Vietnam; The Environmentalist is one of the saddest songs he ever wrote...in that we have to see our earth turning to trash and becoming unlivable; Brown Skin Girls speaks for itself, as loneliness is just a part of war, as with Cora Waits. Real people, living apart, and yet, they reach out across the sea to each other; Kelly’s Tavern is a real place too. Would you believe, Udorn, Thailand of all places; While he never was a hippie he could relate to them and at times found himself jamming with hippies on a beachs in Hawaii; and the Mother Earth News is a real magazine and reading it bought this song into being; and Saddness is Sundown is another lonely song of feelings for you miss home and the security you knew there; and then you find yourself building walls around your heart as a means of self-protection.
