PUSH UK BIOGRAPHY

American born David Saylor moved to the UK in the early 80’s. Young and ambitious in mind, David started searching to find the same level-headed musicians as himself to form a band. David was directed to the now defunct legendary Central Studios in Birmingham city centre where bands and artistes like Robin George, Tony Martin, Tobruk, Shy and Magnum all recorded and demoed there. Upon his arrival David was sent to room 4 of Central Studios where he was to be introduced to Paul Pryor, Brett Hammond and Rob Hewins, who themselves were incidentally pursuing the position for a vocalist. Understanding similar musical ideas now cemented all four together to become Push UK.

Already having some experience under their belt Brett Hammond, guitars and keyboards and bassist Paul Pryor played in the band Orion in 1982 with singer Tony Martin who later joined (Black Sabbath) and on the same bill supported Motorhead and Twisted Sister on their first ever UK tour.

The next 2 years saw Push UK perfecting writing songs and playing live. It was during this period that there was major label interest. Showcased at Rich Bitch Studios an additional guitarist Nik Lloyd was to join the band (who had worked with Brett and Paul in Orion) which freed up the talents of Brett to multitask playing keyboards and guitar. With this line up Push UK performed for CBS, Island, Virgin and RCA. It was the same CBS executives who signed top UK AOR band FM. High in enthusiasm had taken the band to positive new heights but what was to follow was the come-down effect and disappointment due to frustrating and tiring negotiations from the band’s management. The end result led to the failure of a much deserved recording contract.

Push UK had by then recorded and demoed a mix of 12 songs by 1987. A point of interest, Tony Mills (Shy and TNT) stepped in for a short stint as vocalist when David had other commitments for some live gigs. At the start of 1990 Push UK was no longer a band. Nick Lloyd had left prior to the band calling it quits and even today David, Brett, Rob and Paul all remain in contact and are close friends. All four are still active in music and live work as well as playing together in various projects.

David Saylor
David pursued a solo career in the 1990’s pop market in the Spanish speaking countries achieving a good level of success. He has also worked with Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin. David contributed backing vocals to another UK AOR gem which was Atlantic-Power with Tony Mills. Also backing vocals on Siam Language of Menace. David continues to make solo albums and has also added to his musical CV songwriter and guitarist and producer.

Brett Hammond
In the mid 1990’s Brett decided to move to New York and with the band Bigmouth toured opening for UB40 and eventually getting signed to Wild Pitch Records a label out of New York better known for hip hop acts like Gangstarr. Bigmouth continued touring opening for Spacehog, The Presidents of the USA and Tracey Bonham. Finally after Bigmouth separated on a permanent hiatus Brett continues his work in music for film and TV as well as developing and producing many upcoming acts from New York and the UK.

Paul Pryor
Paul has established himself as an in demand studio and live bassist working with the Road Kings and Ruby Turner to name a few. He has also made a cameo appearance in the BBC series Hotel Babylon.

Rob Hewins
Rob started out in Sidewinder in the early 80’s who got played on Radio One’s Tommy Vance Friday rock show. After Push UK Rob was offered the position of drummer in Ultravox but had to decline due to other musical projects. Rob has over the years crossed paths with David, Paul and Brett contributing in various music projects. Rob also played on tracks of Tony Mills, Siam Language of Menace and from 2005 to 2009 he played drums for Martin Turner Wishbone Ash. Rob also plays guitar and is a song writer as well as an established producer and sound engineer.

How this CD was made Melodic rock no matter what people will agree has declined in popularity over the last 20 years but the positive side is what remains are the true small loyal fans around the world today. It is far better to have a thousand fans that continue to love this music then and now than to have a million who pretended to like AOR for all of five minutes. An example of dedication is to feel the buzz and experience by attending the Firefest yearly gig that is run by rock fans for rock fans!

Myself and the UK’s most under rated and the original flamboyant 80’s rock journalist Kelv Hellrazer have been toying over the last decade to join forces in owning a music label on the basis of working closely and sharing ideas with artistes and bands and producing a first class product.

It has been hard work and determination and perseverance that this limited edition CD has now been given a new lease of life for the dedicated fan of AOR to enjoy. I knew of Push UK back in 2005. What was an amazing set of events was to follow. Tape trading from the UK that ends in South America then posted on the internet (thanks Camelblue) the reaction from websites sparked Kelv and I to find who and where are Push UK.

Take a bow Mr Tony Mills who played a vital importance in this project. After a lengthy chat between myself and Brett Hammond it was decided that eleven of the demos would be re-recorded and would be entitled Strange World. So there you have it, this project has been a labour of love and I hope there is more to follow like this.
