FOLK: Folk Blues, COUNTRY: Country Blues

Details:
I’ve always been inspired by music, probably because my mother and father loved it so much and their love for music rubbed off on me somehow. Growing up listening to the country music that they listened to, certainly influenced me. My mother played piano. She could play a mean boogie-woogie and she loved to sing.
The first song that I learned to sing was “Walkin’ After Midnight” by Patsy Cline.
My family didn’t think much of my singing and would oftentimes make fun and my dog would howl. My favorite music was of Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams and the folk masters like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. Writing poetry was often frustrating because I wanted to set those words to music. Although a piano was on my wish list when I was ten, it didn’t happen. After turning fourteen, my uncle gave me forty-five dollars. With that money my uncle took me to a pawnshop and bought my first guitar and songbook. Teaching myself how to play from that book was a daunting task that I embraced with gusto. The poetry that I had been writing suddenly had a melody. Turning sixteen, I began working in lounges making fifty dollars a night twice a week. After winning several contests and performing in school shows, I entered the Junior Miss Savannah contest and won.
At eighteen, I married and had three children. Chris, my oldest, is an accomplished singer/songwriter. Northern California became my home and I lived a “back to the land” lifestyle for a number of years. Farming, midwifery and raising my children in a natural environment inspired me to write songs of those experiences.
After remarrying, I moved to Vancouver, BC, the ‘Hollywood of the North’. I worked as an actor and I developed a costume business, designing costumes for the theater and movie industry.
In early 1990 I moved to Tampa to be near my family and began performing in local venues, eventually putting an all female-band together called “Desiderata”. The talents that I had developed; singing, guitar playing, writing music, acting and costume design, led me to put a one-woman show together called, “Sweet Dreams” A Patsy Cline Tribute. Even though I wanted to take the Patsy Cline show on the road with this band, they had commitments and could not. So, I decided to go it alone with backing tracks instead. Since beginning this show over a decade ago, it has built a strong fan base and I continue to travel nationally to perform in top ranking Performing Arts Venues.
Perhaps the most memorable performances have been in Patsy Cline’s hometown of Winchester, Virginia. I’ve made four return trips to Winchester to perform for various festivals.
Even though Patsy Cline has provided a wonderful creative outlet and financial stability, I continue to write and play original music. My most recent CD, “Lovin’ Life” was released a couple of years ago. I’m going to re-master and re-release it again in the fall and there are plans to record a new CD of my earlier folk music from the farm days. Oh, did I mention, there’s a book in the works………..
