Curl is the performing name for singer-songwriter sisters Heather and Megan Tilston. "Connection" is the debut cut recorded on their own label. It''s also one of those records that shows what a great leveller the internet is. A couple of years ago, I''d have probably missed out on this because I''d not have been able to hear it as the chances are it would have only been available at gigs and a few selected record stores. Now, provided Curl can continue to reach out, anyone can hear this and make a decision on buying it.
Heather and Megan wrote all of the tracks on the album, giving the album an acoustic pop feel with lots of jazz infusion for an album that is relaxed and laid back, but oozes with class and confidence. The harmonies that dominate the album are just so rich. Voices run in families and are a product of you birth circumstances. You feel like these voices could blend if they were screaming at each other because one of them got the last of the cornflakes.
Mellow is an oft used word to describe the easy vibe that permeates through out this type of record. People know what it means and where it places the sound. It is an appropriate word for "Connection", but it is very much only part of the story. Whilst Curl have produced a sound that is easy going, it is also one that has plenty of strength. The reason for that is the way the Tilston sisters have built the album. You get the distinct feeling that this was thought about from the first note to the last. The set feels right.
One of the best bits of advice in any industry is KISS, keep it simple stupid, it''s definitely something that needs to be thought about in music, especially when the songs are so vocal driven. It would be too easy to clutter the background and draw the focus away from one of Curl''s great strengths. Fortunately it''s not a temptation that Curl give into. The songs are as strong and delicate as a spider''s web. They float like gossamer on the wind, creating a solid connection where they touch down.
There''s a very intimate feel to both song and sound, it''s an album that it''s very easy to internalise. This is particularly true when Gareth Icke gets to add a really good bit of sax into the mix. "Connection" is highly polished. It has no rough edges, but that just makes it sharp in a different way.
It''s an album that''s capable of both setting and reflecting your mood. To do that it must be well written, it is. It must be able to appeal to different parts of you, it does. It also refeshes and tantalises.
