CIRCUS MINOR:

I was lost and dreaming about CIRCUS MINOR, those conjuring sounds hidden behind velvet blood-red curtains, forming the musical-echoes of colored flames, lying mirrors, smiling foxes and carnival romance.

I saw lead vocalist and bassist Daniel Denton, carved out of the dark like lightning, his heart thundering through his instrument to become subsonic goth-funk, his eyes closed and teeth gritted, at times scaring me with raw emotional song, and at times lifting me into a milky womb beyond my pain.

Then the Dyad: guitarist Sean Simmons and keyboardist Julie Dicterow, wrapping themselves so luxuriously in their own blankets of hypnotic, atmospheric, undulating waves I can scarcely separate reality from illusion. Sean''s key phrasing and nimble prowess balanced by Julie''s precise choral framing and melodic tastes combine to melt my preconceptions of what is guitar and what is keys, and leave me with aching soul-vertigo.

And beneath all, drummer Adam Alt, sleek and graceful; swift, subtle, and spare with his beats, he waits with mantis-patience, plays with minimal, mechanized passion, and strikes perfectly with cool, blurred rushes; a personalized technique not unlike ancient Japan''s anime-surrealism-jutsu.

It is said these four came together in October 2002 in Los Angeles. They have thoroughly explored the night-terrain and mesmerized LA''s finest time and again, performing everywhere from Viper Room to Silverlake Lounge, including a November 2005 residency at Spaceland. They have played in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and San Diego. They have contributed to the film soundtrack Ill Be There With You due out in theaters this year.

In February 2005 CIRCUS MINOR worked with Ryan Hadlock (Steve Malkmus, Blonde Redhead, The Black Heart Procession) and Jim Wood to create their debut, a self-titled record showcasing a unique, hard-won sound, reminiscent of The Cure, of Joy Division, of The Blackheart Procession, yet remaining teasingly distinct from these, even as the student often surprises the master. They are currently in the process of evoking a much-anticipated follow-up with Todd Spitzer (Death House Chaplain), to be released in May.

And yet, all this is superfluous to the essence of CIRCUS MINOR and their swirling, sub-ethereal, tender coffin rock; their pirate-shuffles which speak of ghostly hearts and even ghostlier promises; their wooden-puppet skeleton-jigs, reminding us of every string still attached to our physic bones; and their cosmic, stretch-your-arms-to-the-horizon, burning like an apocalyptic sunset, like an early-morning solar ocean.

When I woke from my dream CIRCUS MINOR was inside me. It was then I wondered who had been dreaming; did I imagine CIRCUS MINOR, or did they imagine me?
