Details:
Chappy''s sound is harder to nail down than Jude Law''s accent in "I Heart Huckabees". It''s part Mississippi John Hurt, Dave Matthews Band, Ani Difranco, John Mayer, Kaki King, and a little bit of the Muppet Show.

This ever-changing group is entering it''s fourth year and third line-up, with David Sobel (New Orleans Klezmer Allstars) on the drumkit, Denise Bonis (Zydepunks, Jakarta Skyscraper) on violin, and Michael Wagner once again on the guitar and leading the singing (one notable exception being Denises'' beautiful lead vocals on "Blue Skies").

An unassuming trio, Chappy constantly surprises audiences with their full sound. This is thanks largely to the 3-part vocal harmonies that the group uses. Harmonies inspired by groups like Take 6, Allison Krauss and the Stanley Brothers have become a hallmark of Chappy''s sound.

The band''s music is a rare mix of sheer musical virtuosity tempered with pop-sensibility. Each player brings years of musical experience and talent to their sound. David Sobel has played percussion styles ranging from Klezmer to Afro-Cuban. Denise Bonis has developed a unique and haunting tone on her violin, combining it with fiddle techniques she''s learned playing with the Zydepunks. Michael Wagner plays a complex mult-voice guitar that often tricks listeners into thinking that there are multiple guitar tracks.

On top of the instruments there are the vocals. Every song uses three part harmonies to some degree. And these are not auto-tuned background-wash harmonies that too many pop acts use on their records, but raw and honest singing. What you hear on the album is what you''ll get at a live show with the band and some cheap microphones, and maybe a little bit of reverb for fun.

Chappy is an ever changing group. Their new EP "Shallow Seas" is a dramatic departure from their first LP "Floodwaters" released only a year ago. "Shallow Seas" also features some notable guest performers. Washboard Chaz (Tin Men, Washboard Chaz Blues Trio), Brian Wolff (Drums & Tuba), and Dan Oestreicher of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra play on 3 of the album''s 8 songs.

Chappy''s looking to take this new album on the road. If you''d like to see them in your area, just send them an eamil and they''ll try to make it happen. Otherwise, you might have to come to New Orleans to catch one of the best new sounds in music.
