Chadwick declare war on a “Blood Soaked World.”
I doubt anyone would have thought that death rock band, Chadwick, would put aside their indie whining from pussy jail long enough to release an anti-war album worthy of the Vietnam era. And yet they’ve come up with a CD that sounds like a chainsaw wielding maniac unleashed on the crowds at Woodstock.
The CD begins with a song that sounds as if it could have come straight off the band’s 2004 debut “Suicide Sunrise” but quickly evolves into new territory; delving into a gritty industrial groove on “Blood Soaked Intro,” borrowing heavily from grunge on “As far as you know,” offering up a techno dance number (?!) on “Jenny’s under scrutiny,” and shifting through a wide range of rock and roll from gothic to psychedelic.
Surprisingly, the ladies fair relatively well on this recording. The band presents us with “She’s not a slave” to illustrate a new kinder and gentler attitude towards women. This alt-rock song tells the tale of a woman who’s not afraid to live as she sees fit no matter who might sit in judgment. Chadwick attempt to shy away from their sexist image and almost succeed, indulging in only one anger driven ex-love song, “Twice ya lied.” However, the band does have a rather serious misstep along the path to enlightenment with the song “Rack ‘n Ruin,” a lament centered on a woman’s breasts.
Still, Chadwick remain as unpredictable as ever as they revel in the opportunity to abuse a light love-lost ballad from the 1920’s, “Who’s Sorry Now” successfully twisting the tune into a feverish nightmare. The band’s leader, coincidentally named Chadwick, indulges his Ozzy fixation as the band pays tribute to Black Sabbath with an astonishingly faithful rendition of the 1970 classic, “Paranoid.”
The return of former Chadwick collaborator, guitarist Jefferson Leddy, whose work with the band has previously only been captured on live bootlegs, gives this recording an added dimension of monster guitar chops and blistering leads. The band wastes none of Jefferson’s talent, seemingly allowing him unlimited space to crank out solos, and thus making this CD a guitar lover’s dream.
