TIM CHIPMAN-CHUBBY RECORDS
Tim Chipman is essentially starting his music career over. In the late sixties and seventies he played lead guitar and sang in several bands, mostly in the Midwest. In the very early seventies, he was hired by a company in Lawrence, Kansas, to play in a show band called "The Fabulous Flippers". They traveled from Quebec City to Los Angeles playing in clubs and colleges all over the continent. The days of the Flippers were coming to a close so Tim moved on to eventually get out of the business all together. He married, had three children, and started a successful cleaning business. A few years back, his wife, Becky, surprised him with a new acoustic guitar which in turn sparked the old creative juices that were lying under the surface for a good twenty years.

He started writing again and was having so much fun that he decided to try and record some of them in hopes someone famous would pick one up and use it themselves. Others encouraged him to go ahead and make an album himself and that''s how Chubby Records began. He built a small studio in his family basement, piece by piece, and started learning the recording process from scratch. He plays all the instruments on this first CD so each part has to be laid down one at a time. The songs start as ideas he gets sometimes while working , and then little by little evolve into the whole piece you hear when you listen to the final product.

His musical tastes have broadened over the years but still loves the old Elvis stuff, before the white jump suits, the Beatles, Roy Orbison, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Joe Walsh, the Eagles etc, etc. He also really enjoys a lot of the new country, Steve Warener, Vince Gill, Shania Twain, Brian White, and so on.

In His Own Words

I really like all kinds of music as long as I''m listening to a song. I''m not crazy about long jams with screaming guitars. The best of the old Rock and Rollers, Beatles, James Gang, Led Zeppelin, even Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton wrote songs with lyrics and melodies. If I can''t relate to the lyrics or the melody I just can''t relate to the song at all. Sometimes for me the melody is strong enough all by itself and a fantastic guitar player can really nail you to your chair. I try to write melodies and lyrics that mean something, not only to me, but anyone who happens to be listening.

My favorite songs are the ones that move me in some way or another, either by the melody or the lyrics, and most of the time both. Those are the songs that twenty years later you can still sing along with. Little by little my studio is growing and hopefully we''ll be out with another CD soon. "Becky Jane" is a song about how my wife and I met and eventually married. "In My Memory" is about watching her become a wife and then a mother. "Rock and Roll Fever" is a tribute to some of my heroes in the business. "Bridges" is a song about the pitfalls and triumph of love. "Do You Remember?" tells a story about drummer, Ted Kotz, who was drafted to the army just as we were beginning to go places. The bonus track (not listed) I made up one night when my oldest daughter, who is now 24, was about 1, dancing around in front of me while I sat on the floor with my old guitar. I named the whole project after my song, "Best Years". It talks about the human tendency to be forever wishing for tomorrow because things will be different. We''ll be kinder, more prosperous, thinner, fatter, living in a better place where other people are all these things, and in reality the happiest people know that today , right where you are, can be the best years of all. It''s up to us. I hope you enjoy the music. Tim Chipman 04/02
