Proclaimed “smooth as silk” by the Cincinnati Enquirer, Chris Buckholz is a virtuoso trombonist in both classical music and jazz. Dr. Buckholz is Assistant Professor of Trombone at the University of Northern Iowa. From 1997-2005, Buckholz was the lead trombonist and a principal soloist for the Army Jazz Ambassadors in Washington, D.C. He is an experienced performer and educator, playing and teaching across the United States and internationally. He has a solo CD of original jazz compositions to his credit; the 2006 release Muse, and is a Conn-Selmer performing artist.

As a principal soloist with the Jazz Ambassadors, Buckholz was featured in concerts with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops at Tanglewood, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Pops at Riverbend, Blossom Music Festival, and Carnegie Hall. He also performed at the Toronto Jazz Festival, the Victoria Jazz Festival, the Detroit-Montreux Jazz Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Breckinridge Music Festival.

In addition to his performance duties, Buckholz was a clinician for the Jazz Ambassadors. He has lectured and performed at New York University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Florida International University, the University of Memphis, Texas State University, Western Michigan University, the University of Nevada--Las Vegas, the University of Maryland, Loyola University, Belmont University, East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, and the High School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Houston, TX.

As a freelance trombonist, Buckholz has performed as lead trombonist with Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Lou Rawls, Bob Hope, Charley Pride, Smokey Robinson, Johnny Mathis, The Temptations, Vince Gill, and Rosemary Clooney, among many others. He has played on hundreds of studio recordings, and toured extensively and recorded with The Four Tops. His orchestral experience includes the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the New Haven Symphony, Orchestra New England, the Winston-Salem Symphony, and the New Britain Symphony.

Dr. Buckholz earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 2001. Concurrent to his doctoral studies, he was Assistant Professor of Trombone at Bowling Green State University, and was the teaching assistant in trombone at the University of Michigan. He received his Master of Music diploma from Yale University in 1995, and his B.A. degree from Wake Forest University in 1989. His principal teachers include Dennis Smith, Arnold Jacobs, John Swallow, David Langlitz, Conrad Herwig, Curtis Fuller, Steve Davis, and Jim McFalls.
