Joe Stanton’s grass-roots music gently grabs you and takes you on a timeless journey of people and places. His lyrics are rich with imagery and emotion. His voice resonates with an intimate style that warmly invites you into his reflective world.
“My songs are inspired mostly by places I go and the people I meet along the way”, explains Stanton. “I try and put a message of hope in my songs, to look around at the world and see the good things, and change the rest.”
Combined with his remarkable songwriting ability, Joe Stanton is a formidable guitar player. From upbeat country rifts to dark sensuous chords, Joe’s guitar is captivating. He plays the full spectrum of music: folk, traditional country, swing and blues … “but it’s usually tinted with a bit of country twang”, adds Stanton. An accomplished guitar picker, in 2001 he performed in the US Fingerpicking contest in Winfield, Kansas. In 1985, Stanton was nominated for a BC Country Music Association Award for his instrumental “Smokin”.
Youngest in a musical family, Stanton grew up listening to records that his older siblings and parents brought home. His early influences went from opera and classical (his mom), jazz and country (his dad), rock (his brothers) and folk (his sister). “So I always say that I was influenced by anyone who ever picked up a guitar”, remarks Stanton.
“My musical journey started when I was about ten years old. My dad would come home from work, pour a rye and pick up his guitar. When he put it down, I would always try and play. Eventually I figured it out”
Since then, Stanton has grown to become a highly respected folk artist. His musical experience is rich and diverse. From jazz to blue grass, Stanton has explored many styles of music and has worked with many talented artists. With a growing fan base, he has toured throughout Canada and Switzerland.
In 2003, Stanton recorded his third CD, Passenger Stanton, a collection of contemporary folk songs, described by Roots Music Report as “a beautifully composed album rich with depth and passion.”
