Details:
Song fully successful comes songwriter Joyce Allsup, almost swept away by the global response of her ever-so-popular duet, “We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes (In the Morning)” which was a chart winner in the 60’s, sung by The Grand Old Opry duo, Carl and Pearl Butler, of Columbia Records. There was a single, a greatest hits album, and a cd released on Koch Records. It now has acquired world acclaim, as it has been recorded and released many, many times through the years by numerous artists, and has many current releases and re-issues.

“We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes” has been sweeping the countries, internationally, sung by the amazing “Gram Parsons and EmmyLou Harris,” for a number of years, and is also released in many languages. With these two well-known legends singing her song, I’d say, Joyce Allsup must have been born a songwriter!

By the way, Joyce hails from a small town in Virginia, called Schuyler, which is the setting for the famed “Walton’s Mountain” TV series, and regards all the Walton’s as very good friends. Joyce resides in Hendersonville, TN now, and loves it.

It didn’t take long for Nashville to welcome her into the music industry, as she is a versatile, prolific, and very original writer. Joyce wasted no time. She went to recording company executives and was told “she was writing ahead of her time. Her songs were recorded and released immediately. That was like adding fuel to a flame!

So therefore, very soon her songs had attracted major artists, major labels, and “Hall of Famers.” To name a few:

Artist & Song
Carl & Pearl Butler – “We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes”
Gram Parsons & EmmyLou Harris – “We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes”
Worldwide artists – Too numerous to mention – “We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes”
Mel Tillis – “Can You Build Your House (On Another Man’s Grave)”
Lefty Frizzell – “You Don’t Have to be Present to Win” – Album & Box Set
Ernest Tubb & Loretta Lynn – “I Reached for the Wine” – Album & Box Set
Porter Wagoner – “My Baby Turns the Lights on Uptown” – Album
Stonewall Jackson – “Touch Me Not” – Album
Jimmy Dickens – “Can You Build Your House (On Another Man’s Grave)”
Bobby Wright – “No, Not Quite” – of the “McHale’s Navy” – TV Show
And the list goes on and on…

Joyce is an affiliate of BMI, and naturally has many friends while writing in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and on through 2005. Her tunes are found in all genres, also all formats, and as mentioned, in many different languages.

Among the many accomplishments like top 10 songs and many others in the national charts it seems that “We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes” has now become an old standard and she’s elated about it. The song is also on EmmyLou Harris’s album, titled “Late Date,” released in 1982, then in 1984, followed by a cd, later released in 1999, a real big chart-winner on Eminent Records, that stayed there for a long time.

Hope you’re acquainted with the Gram Parson’s Tribute Concert in California, now on DVD, called “Sin City,” hosted by Polly Parson’s, Grams Daughter. I loved John Doe and Kathleen Edwards’s performance of “We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes.” It was very good and in a California newspaper it was said to be the highlight of the show!

The song is also featured on a CMT video, also on on the film “Fallen Angel” showing in the U.K., with Gram Parsons, soon to be in the U.S. on DVD.

It looks like Joyce Allsup knows what to do with a song, get them multi-recorded! One thing’s for sure, she’s always writing one. Yeah, she jumped into music like a flash fire, but her career of 35 years was destined to be a long-burn, and “We’ll Sweep Out the Ashes” (In the Morning).
