I was born and raised in West Virginia. I now reside in North Carolina with my wife where I am attending graduate school. I was born into a musical family; my dad has always loved music and luckily, passed his passion on to me.
I began playing the guitar when I was about fourteen. I borrowed a book from a friend and began learning a few chords. Once I picked up the basic chords, I began playing a few songs...over and over. Eventually I got sick of playing the handful of songs I knew, and decided it was time to move on.....and learn three more chords, which enabled me to play a few other songs. This pattern continued for a while until I "hit a wall". I knew there was more to the guitar. All of the songs I was playing sounded the same...I wanted to learn something different...something new, then I heard Dave Matthews. I had never seen or heard chords like this cat was playing and was instantly hooked. So I went into DMB mode for a while, learning the different chord structures and the songs.
Later on down the road I got a fingerstyle compilation CD from Narada and instantly became hooked on fingerstyle guitar, in particular Don Ross (amazing, amazing, amazing, genius writer/player). I had never heard the guitar sound like this before, but man was he funky. I loved his music. It wasn''t like any other fingerstyle songs I''d heard. I slowly began learning different techniques and alternate tunings and my playing and songwriting hasn''t been the same since.
I''ve been playing fingerstyle guitar now for about 3 years. On my debut album, Running With Giants, I have incorporated fingerstyle guitar with acoustic rock (I guess that''s what you call it). Two fingerstyle tunes are showcased on this album. The title track, "Running With Giants", I wrote for Don. Other tracks came from a variety of influences. I love all kinds of music, and am inspired by many other artists. I believe writers are greatly influenced by who they listen to. As I stated above, I''m a big DMB fan. Obviously, I''m hooked on my man Don Ross. I also enjoy Jack Johnson, Michael Hedges, Coldplay, Andy McKee, ...love me some David Gray, John Mayer, Pierre Bensusan, Rush, Ben Harper, Carter Lancaster, Billy McLaughlin, Norah Jones, Eric Clapton, Del Vezeau, Leo Kottke, and tons more. My point is I love lots of different music and I think you''ll hear a mix of these great artists on my album Running With Giants, which gives it such a unique sound.
