FOLK: Modern Folk, NEW AGE: New Age

Details:
I began playing the guitar at the age of 14. My first real guitar was a blue Fender Mustang (Yes, I still have it) and I played basically rhythm guitar. When I first heard Leo Kottke, I was absolutely stunned, amazed, and on my way to a new style of playing. I listened to all the fingerstyle guitar records that I could get my hands on. Everything from Kottke to Segovia, it was a whole new world to explore. I continued playing more or less traditional fingerstyle guitar until once again my head was turned. I saw Michael Hedges play on PBS Television, I can''t begin to tell you how exciting it was to see and hear something so different and new on the guitar! I believe that the more people you listen to and see play will somehow teach, influence, and inspire the creativeness within you. Here were a new batch of artists who have influenced my playing -- Preston Reed, Billy McLaughlin, and Stanley Jordan. More recently Tommy Emmanuel, and Stephen Bennett have contributed their influences to my music.

Over the years I have taken those influences and molded them into my own style. In 1997, I recorded my first CD "Just Guitar", a collection of 15 original pieces which vary from Traditional fingerstyle to a double tapping technique. In June of 2000 I came out with another CD called "Hometown". Some of the songs include arrangements for cello and hand percussion along with the fingerstyle and double tapping techniques. My recently recorded third CD "Images" released in mid-January 2004. "Images" is a compilation of 16 songs -- 4 of which are played on a 12 string baritone guitar. Other songs on the album include Native American Flute and/or percussion tracks.

Liner notes from "Images":
For me, music creates images. While being written each of the songs created its own image for me spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. These range from a mother''s fondest memories of the little boy she once held as he is about to graduate from High School to the hope and agony of soldiers on a battlefield long silent but forever remembered. As my songs develop, they seem to take on a life of their own, coming from and going to places over which I seem to have no direct control. It is as though my guitar is but the voice of a greater power. On previous albums I have related my own vision for each of my compositions, but now I prefer to allow the music to take you on your own journey, free of my own predirection. May these songs help awaken your spirit of wonder and create your own images to the music of life.
