Details:
‘Step Into the Light’:
The second solo CD for Jacquie Walters, formerly a member of ‘Pounamu’. ‘Step Into The Light’ features 13 original songs from the pop-like title track to the sparse and emotive ‘Harvest Of Tears’ which is based on stories gathered during Walters’ time working as the editor of a logging magazine. ‘Icarus’ is a tribute to the late New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange. There’s a touch of country on ‘My Little Girl’ and some delicate, sensitive playing from notable session musicians such as Mark Laurent (guitar) and Janet Holborow (cello). New Zealand Folk Album of the Year finalist for 2005, Chris Priestley, also makes an appearance as a backing vocalist. This CD is for lovers of the acoustic sound.

Critical responses to ‘Step Into The Light’:

“A clear, crisp and passionate recording.” Martyn Pepperell, NZ Musician

“Full of love, longing, and romance…this really is a beautiful album…A very fine songstress indeed…She’s just crafted these songs so beautifully.” Liz Barry, ‘Good Morning’ Television 1, New Zealand.

Jacquie Walters:
Jacquie is a freelance writer, editor, and singer-songwriter. Jacquie began composing songs before she could read and sang in choirs during her school years. From 1987-1989 she trained as a singer under Welsh tenor Alun Jones during her two years at the United World College of the Atlantic, in Wales.
After returning to New Zealand she regularly performed at folk clubs and festivals around the country, forming a group called ‘Pounamu’ with Ariana Tikao and Leigh Taiwhati. The group recorded ‘Koha’ before Leigh left the group.

‘Pounamu’, then comprised of Jacquie and Ariana, went on to record ‘Uha’ and ‘Mihi’, made regular appearances on regional television, and were selected to represent the South Island on a multi-part musical series recorded on the roof of the TVNZ building in Auckland. They were also selected to represent New Zealand in order to deliver the Body Shop’s petition against French nuclear testing to the Presidential Palace in Paris in 1996. During their trip they performed on the BBC World Service and in Sydney, London, Paris, and Strasbourg.

In 1999 Jacquie toured and performed at UK festivals as part of ‘Freewheelin’ with Pete Dean and Kate Bramley. Kate is now a member of Jez Lowe’s band ‘The Bad Pennies’.

In 2000 Jacquie returned to New Zealand. She recorded her first solo CD ‘Dreamwalking’ in Christchurch in 2000. The title track from the CD received an honourable mention in the Billboard World Song Contest. A second track from the album achieved an honourable mention in the Unisong International Song Competition.

She recorded her second solo cd ''Step Into The Light'' in 2006.
