Details:
Music has been a powerful force in my life since early childhood; growing up in a family of talented musicians, it is as natural to me as breathing. Although I began singing rock and roll at age sixteen, I was classically trained. (I even joined the San Diego Opera Company.) Yet the food of my creative life is good, hard, Bay Area funk: Larry Graham, Cold Blood, Tower of Power, as well as rock and roll: The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, the Allman Brothers, and the like.
I’ve performed in Europe, Asia, and the USA as a solo act, and in the studio for Warner, EMI, Victor Records, CBS, and RCA, and written and recorded commercial soundtracks for Suntory and Bridgestone. I was a featured artist at the Yamaha Music Festival, and the Earth Day Concert on the Queen Mary in Long Beach along with members of Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, Toto, and Deep Purple.
I have performed for audiences that included Mikhail Gorbachev, the Japanese Royal Family, the Crown Prince of Brunei, Bob Dylan, and James Brown (quite an interesting cast of characters).
In Germany, I am on the Taxim Records release "Disaster City Blues", a compilation CD of Los Angeles blues artists.
I have always had a hard time labeling my work. I am eclectic, an artist of many influences (rock, blues, r & b, country, funk, world, and jazz), and I can’t or won’t be pigeon-holed. In the past, record company execs would tell me they loved my voice and and tunes, and then would add,”But what do you do?” Well, I do music - music from the heart and soul, unrestricted by the marketing standards of record company attorneys and accountants. No wonder I’m not rich and famous!
The advent of the Internet has afforded musicians the opportunity to break out on their own; it’s a revolution! With that in mind, I am currently writing songs that reflect my frustration with the state of U.S. politics and our country.
“The Other Half” deals with the issue of the working poor in our society. “One Word” is about the power of words to foment fear and prejudice against those who are “different” from us. “Freedom Funk” addresses the attempts by our current governmental “regime” at stripping us of our rights, and the urgent need to defend them. I have done my best to express these ideas in a form that is musically engaging. (“Freedom Funk” grooves, man!) I have also included the bonus track ”Back to Eden”. It will soon be apparent as you listen that this song is about the Middle East (and it ROCKS). The other three songs in the collection are more light-hearted and fun. We can ALL use more fun these days!
Please enjoy these musical offerings.
Peace and love to all.
Jaime
